CHARLES D. ELLIS is a recognized expert on investment management. OK. This book is very dry and I'm surprised that a fellow as well lauded as the author writes in such a mish-mash manner. He needed a good editor to help him tell the Capital story the way it should have been told.But I'm glad I read the book to learn more about the original driving personalities and culture of the company that has remained under the radar for years. Of course, since the Big Recession 'Capital' has undergone a re-organization and many of the old stalwarts are retired or side-lined, the company has been streamlined, and the 'money management by committee' scheme has been redesigned, so admittedly the book is dated.But it's still a good 'inside' look at how one regional money management company grew to become one of the biggest and most respected international investment companies in the twentieth century. And the book is an informative insight in to the differences among various fund management companies and their various philosophies with regard to serving their clientsIf you are investing a significant amount of money, your own or other people's, in managed or indexed stock funds, it's a good book to know about.

Good history on a great company. I was there in 1969 when it was run by Jonathon Lovelace. Glad it prospered; it was a good company to work for.

Worthwhile read for someone interested in Capital Group. Provides an historical account (lot of detail) of how the firm and it's philosophy were founded. Most useful for someone interested in interviewing or investing with Capital Group.

Excellent Book on Capital Guardian.

As expected

Capital, the parent firm of American Funds, is one of the finest business organizations in American Business. This book was written by an index fund /no-load proponent who was looking to debunk American Funds (which are neither indexed, nor no-load) and instead he (Ellis) discovered their exceptional values, performance and pricing. This story is fast-paced and highly interesting, both to Advisors and clients.

Does the trick for basic planning and site seeing. The maps and directions are weak for anything outside the strict city centers of Melaka and Penang even though the book makes several references to sites outside those areas. There should be some more information there. The book fortunately provides some basic bus info for Penang, but should go a step further in supporting the main routes with some simple maps, as the local authority doesn't get the job done in that department. Bottom line is that you should find a way to purchase more detailed maps with broader scope for Penang especially and mark it up with bus and other info before departing.

I much prefer Fodor's or Frommer's guides, but couldn't find them for KL. This book is unfortunately not organized well by neighborhood. That means you need to look at where you are on a master map, find the neighborhood map, look for listings, then flip to the overall "Restaurants" listing to find the one that is close to you (for instance). Also, the attractions are not organized alphabetically so it's a hunting expedition every time you look for one. Keep a supply of post-it flags handy so you can easily find those 3 locations in the book.

Ebooks have certainly come a long way. Really well put together and hyperlinked to vital and informative information. Reading it on a droid tablet is a bit of a surprise, colorful and clever.

This book helped me travel successfully throughout Kuala Lumpur. The recommendations were spot on! I would highly recommend it for travelers who are headed to Malaysia.

Of course the Lonely Planet is the bible for south-east Asia, but reading it on Kindle is a nightmare. I hope others are different, but I basically found it useless given the maps are unreadable (full map is tiny and reading a map in eight different segments is not helpful). Flicking back and forth on the basic Kindle wastes a ton of time. So save yourself the trouble and buy the real book! I had to. It was driving me nuts.

Very detailed and proved valuable for our trip to Penang.

The guide is ok for the three cities, but is no matc h for the print edition of Malaysia & Singapore. Navigation & search are also very rudimentary. It was alway easier to find what you were looking for in the printed book (this is probably a fetire of the. Kindle-format rather than this particular book).

The book itself is good, however it did not really work as a Kindle, the maps are not visible and it is not great to navigate

About the Author

Carol did not let the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease in 2008 slow her down. After her retirement, she took to the road, walking over 750 miles in France and Spain on the Camino de Santiago and cycling with the Pedaling for Parkinson's-Davis Phinney Road Team in three of the Registers Annual Great Bike Rides Across Iowa. Carol is an advocate and fund-raiser for Parkinson's Disease organizations. She serves as an Ambassador for the Davis Phinney Foundation. Carol and her husband Charlie facilitate the local PD support group. They have raised two boys, two horses and 50 calves (but no chickens) over the years on their small acreage in Hermiston, Oregon.

A friend who manages a bookstore tried to turn me on to this offering two years ago and it took me this long to get around to reading it. Now I'm kicking myself for not doing so earlier. "Lamb" is alternately touching, funny, thought-provoking and even inspirational. In an era where so much of what is published (or self-published) is utter crap, it's good to know there are still a few authors taking the time to craft brilliant, enjoyable stories.For the first time in a long time, I had a hard time putting a book down. This one cut into my sleep, but it was so worth it! I'm now reading another Moore book, "A Dirty Job," and I'm happy to report it also is excellent. I'm sure I'll be reading everything this author has in print within the next few months. One caveat, however: if you're a person with ... mmm ... something less than flexible religious convictions who's easily offended, you may want to give this one a miss. It's intended -- at least in part -- as parody, but I'm guessing not everyone is going to get the joke.

This story tries to imagine the big gap that occurs between Jesus' birth and his the years of public ministry. Told from the modern day perspective of Jesus' best friend, the book portrays the Messiah as that perfect kid you couldn't even hate because he is just too good. The book doesn't espouse any philosophy or dogma, but it also refrains from making fun of the beliefs of Judaism or Christianity in anything but an affectionate way. If you have an affection for religion without taking it too seriously, you might find this an enjoyable read. I sure did.

This book was given to me by my son-in-law. When I started reading it I did not understand why he would give me such a strange book? I could not get into it.But I did not want to disappoint him so I resolved to at least give it a try. Since I love audio books, I added audio to this book and voila, the book took a totally new meaning. I love the narrator Fisher Stevens and listening to him brought the book to live.The book is funny and sweet and strange and I loved Charlie Asher. The story takes place over number of years where newborn Sophie is growing up on top floor of Charlieâ€™s second hand clothing store. She is being cared for by two immigrant ladies Chinese and Russian.The talent of Fisher Stevens is so great that all character voices and accents are tailored to the characters, recognizable and in case of babysitters very funny because they were so real sounding.Charlie Asher is identified as Beta male, which according to the book description is dependable, loyal, responsible and sensible individual. It sounds boring but Charlie is far from it â€“ Charlie is a Death Merchant and Soul Collector.Since Charlies wife Rachel died right after Sophie was born, Charlie is raising her himself and she is the most important person in his life, but his job sometimes takes him away from Sophie under most unusual circumstances.The writing is very good. The dialogue between the different characters is so real and entertaining that it reminded me of my own family gatherings.All characters are worth mentioning â€“ Lillie, the Goth girl; Ray, the retired disabled detective; Charlieâ€™s sister Jane who canâ€™t decide on her life partner and Charlieâ€™s daughter Sophie, who just by saying word â€œkittyâ€ makes people and animals disappear.And the ending did not disappoint.5 stars for the story and 5 stars for the narrator Fisher Stevens

As a Catholic I had some "hang ups" when I first read it. I even went as far to put it away and not read it anymore cause I was just SOOO sure I was right about things. I told the friend that recommended it to me that is was certainly NOT my cup of tea. He is not particularly spiritual or Christian. He told me this was the book that GOT him to read the whole bible. He laughed and cried through the whole book "Lamb" he said....So I put my "thoughts" on a shelf and read it. I laughed and I cried. I am heart broke the book is finished. The kind of heart broke that you feel when your favorites TV series has its last show of its last season and no more will be made EVER. How WILL you go on is how one feels. This book has gotten me to STUDY the bible more. When I come upon certain stories in the bible that were talked about in this book "Lamb", the stories Biff, Jesus childhood friend refers too, I laugh and remember Biffs spin on it cause he was supposedly there and he told it His way. It gives me the feeling of belonging that I feel I know something that no one else knows. I huger to read more of the bible now just to keep that feeling. Yes I know which is the real and which is from the book Lamb. I just like feeling of belonging now

I am a devout Christian...I also appreciate good writing and a person's effort and sense of humor. Moore has clearly done a lot of research into the Jewish ways of life and all sorts of things in the time period when Jesus lived. He said mixed it with some imagination and well meant humor. I loved the book! He went wild with it and i loved every minute of it...i know a lot of Christians might call it blasphemous but I think to that Jesus would say, "relax, take a chill pill"

it'd been a few years since i'd read a christopher moore book, and i knew i was ready for his absurd, heart-warming, over-the-top brand of comedy-horror, and i got everything i could have hoped for with a dirty job. here's the first sentence: "charlie asher walked the earth like an ant walks on the surface of water, as if the slightest misstep might send him plummeting through the surface to be sucked to the depths below." timid charlie asher of course winds up a merchant of death, like santa's elves, only for death. together with a few other merchants he meets, his infant daughter, sister, his employees at his thrift store, a cop, two hellhounds, and a mysterious tibetan mystic, charlie must figure out why darkness is descending upon san francisco. hilarious, wise, exciting, and filled with enough dark imagery to be perceived of as a cry for help, moore nonetheless manages to create a stirring romance and morbid journey to self-recovery. highly recommended.

This book was waiting for me in my Kindle file on the day it came out and I devoured it. I have read other biographies of Oâ€™Keeffe but I liked Ms. Burkeâ€™s gift for dramatizing the relationships among the four artists she chose to write about. I was especially grateful to learn about Rebecca Salsbury Strand. The author cuts away all the excess info and gossip and shows us the passion and the talent of her subjects in sharp relief. This is a book that is beautifully written!

Now Say This arrived yesterday - perfect timing - since we had an "adventure" in the car with our new puppy that ended with my 6 year old sobbing, 10 year old yelling and the poor puppy freaking out. I was completely frazzled. I started reading the book out loud with the kids over dinner. Read the parent's part about how we yell, nag etc. when frustrated and my kids laughed and nodded - yes - some of the examples sound like mom. Went through the ALP steps (attune, limit set, problem solve) and then tried it. The kids were super into it and we had a great talk and came up with some new plans for when we are stressed out. This only took about five minutes and was such a great reset for us. So the bottom line - this book is an easy read, practical and helpful from page one and the techniques work for children of different ages (probably for spouses too). Will keep reading...

I have to say I so rarely get a parenting book that I actually finish and want to review. This one really spoke to me. It is immensely helpful with the practicle steps, and real examples. I am the parent with the best intentions that often gets frustrated in the moment and yells. The practice of the 3 steps kind of resets the way everyone in the family communicates. I even see the kids being more relfective and less reactive in some hard moments. Everyone is calming down. My kids are old enough (6 and 11) to understand that there is an intention behind this. But I wish I had read this when they were younger! After reading this am hopful that our start to the school year will be less stressful around morning and homework times.

This is a truly fantastic book. My wife and I have started putting ALP into practice and have already begun to see some encouraging changes around our household. Although a challenge at times, staying positive and calm has started to rub off on my daughter. When we slip I can see a negative difference in how she reacts, which to me just reinforces that the process works. One thing mentioned in the book that has proven especially true, she really loves to help! What a lifesaver for when we have to get something done. I used to have to turn on a movie and hope it would hold her attention while I made dinner. Now, I can tell her that I know she really wants to keep playing with me, but that itâ€™s time to make dinner and that I could really use her help. We get out a step stool and she happily â€œhelpsâ€ me. Great bonding moments. I could go on and on, but in short, Thank you!

I love this practical guide for speaking to children effectively and with respect. I'm a busy working mom (physician) of 8 and 10 year old children. The three step process (ALP) made it simple as I learned to implement their method. Now it feels natural, and my home environment is happier (and feels easier after a long day) because of it. My husband and I feel we have more time to truly enjoy our kids now. Oddly, we didn't realize we had a problem, and I read the book because I learned so much from the authors in their first book together. Thank you, Heather and Julie!!

This book, and the author's Happy Sleeper, are incredible resources for parents. This book is easy to read, concepts are clear and the examples are excellent. This book is a must for any and all Grey Gardens fans. I would have given it 5 stars, but something really bugged me upon reading the Forward/Introduction by Albert Maysels. For the most part, I enjoyed his write up, which was heartfelt and filled with keen pshycological insight. However, one thing is factually incorrect: He states Big Edie "married a Bouvier." In truth, she was born into the family as the daughter of a Bouvier. It made it sound like she married into the Bouviers, when in fact she married into the Beale family. I am not sure how someone like Maysles (or his daughters, for that matter) with such an integral knowledge of these ladies would have made such an error, or how in proofing this mistake wasn't caught. Perhaps if there is ever a future edition, they can correct it. That said, the book is a wonderful compilation of information, notes and photos and well worth purchasing.

This book is a total joy. It has over 200 pages of images we've never seen and it totally captures the feeling of both Grey Gardens documentaries. There is SO MUCH STUFF included in this! There are all kinds of quotes we have never heard before, lots and lots of great conversation transcripts and a transcript of the film! A true gem, is the accompanying CD (with high quality sound!) of audio, all previously unheard! The things on this CD are absolutely priceless! At one point Mrs. Beale is singing a song dramatically and in between every pause, you can hear Little Edie calling out "Whiskers!? Whiskers?" We are also treated to the Beale's live (audio) reaction to watching the film for the first time! They apparently adored it 'like mad'! Little Edie laughs nervously at first. In the book, you will see a notation where Edie declares the film will win "Nine awards. You saw 'Gigi'? It gone nine."The layout of this book is in a scrap book fashion with lots of original artwork from the daughters of the Maysles. One gets the feeling from this book, that it was created out of true appreciation for the Beale ladies with no self-centered agenda. This was clearly put together with the fans in mind and they definitely deliver. The Maysles daughters had access to treasures no one else could.I would highly recommend this for every single Grey Gardens fan out there. It will be a great addition to your collection.

I ordered this book after an art teacher recommended it. I found it was easier to find a movie than the actual book, but I was happy to finally track this book down. It was one of the forerunners of the the Broadway show Grey Gardens. It is an amazing story and I am sure many of my friends will be interested in this amazing tale. The book arrived in good condition, was well packaged an arrived in a timely manner.

WOULD NOT BUY AGAIN> IT IS SIMPLY OUTTAKES FROM THE FILMING!

I love Grey Gardens and everything having to do with it. The two Eddies are a hoot. Many probably won't like the format of this book as it reads like a scrapbook - but I still found it interesting...didn't really learn anything new but it was fun to just page through the scrapbook and to think about what it must have been like.

When I began approaching this review I was going to start by saying "The Planets" is not a scientific book. That take wasn't going to be a criticism, simply an observation. There are no data presented in charts and tables, not one photo or illustration - nothing really quantified. And yet Sobel succeeds in a profile of the planets by weaving what they are into a cultural tale. After all, the majority of humans who ever lived had no real idea what those wandering lights were. Sobel juxtaposes planetary knowledge gained robotically in the last half century - knowledge that can seemalmost pedestrian to us - with the long-ago myths and god-like status given to planets as an explanation for them was sought.I once interviewed people for a print publication. As any good interviewer knows, the point is not to simply ask a list of questions and check them off. The key is to begin a conversation with the subject. This process takes longer, as what will be the interview must be found in the taped conversation, and as background information about the subject is fitted around his or her words. So, really, this is what Sobel did - she interviewed the solar system.Although I agree Sobel can be verbose at times, other reviewers have criticized the book's lack of explicit presentation. I think they miss the point. I am not a lay person regarding the subject, but I enjoyed learning about the historically cultural aspects of our neighbors. As one example, Sobel's description of tidal action contains no coefficients, and yet it is an elegant and accessible depiction. This book can be a good starting point for the lay person.

I met Dava Sobel at an astronomy conference. What a wonderful woman! I have her other two books, Galileo's Daughter and Longitude. Longitude is a MUST READ. This book is also great.

My daughter enjoyed this as part of an Astronomy study.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the premise of this book. It is not intended as a scientific journal elaborating on the most detailed of newly arrived astronomical data. It is informative in a pleasant, albeit, pedestrian way. It is a quick stroll across our solar system, skipping from planet to moon, to comet, to asteroid - like skipping a stone across the surface of a broad deep pool of knowledge. I learned many new things and had my memory jogged on items that had sifted through my memory.It was worth while getting up to speed on the latest discoveries of Viking, Voyager, Galileo, Cassini and other of our space probes. It was also interesting to read a little background of famous astronomers who dedicated their lives to gazing at the heavens.Nevertheless, this book lacks the passionate detail of Sobel's other works. Both "Longitude" and "Galileo's Daughter impelled the reader into the historic drama that she was presenting. There is no particular hero in this descriptive book and that may well a problem. It is more a high school reader chockablock full of facts and information. There is no detail, no in-depth analysis, no personality, no drama here. It is, perhaps, too dispassionate a subject for her keen writing skills.

Great book

Some hard-core science readers might not have liked it, but I though that this book was informative enough, and Dana Sobel's intelligent and poetic writing makes it for what the book might have lacked in scientific depth. A lovely book.

Both of Ms. Sobel's previous books, Longitude and Galileo's Daughter, are works of impressive scholarship and readability--two qualities that don't always go together. In fact, it can be argued that the publication of Longitude revived the genre of popular science writing; in particular, what might be called the sub-genre of "making the obscure exciting." Ms. Sobel has an ability to take a comparatively unknown person in scientific history, make him or her interesting and place him or her in the scope of the larger sweep of scientific history that is unequaled, despite her even most successful imitators. Therefore, it is no surprise that her new book, The Planets, had considerable buzz before its release. Unfortunately, this book is somewhat of a letdown.Ms. Sobel has chosen an interesting subject: the solar system. It is surprising how little the average person knows about this conglomeration of an average star (the sun) and nine (or is it eight now?) planets of which our own earth is but a part. Certainly, the reading public is in need of a book to popularize the solar system, so to speak.It is also true that Ms. Sobel has written an account that is interesting in many ways and definitely up-to-date. The most recent findings of our most traveled probes and deepest-seeing telescopes are recounted here, though it's amazing how quickly even the findings of a few months ago are superseded. Just last week, the discovery of two new moons of Pluto were announced. Already, it is tempting to wonder how this would have changed Ms. Sobel's approach to Pluto and Charon. The sad fact is that this book will soon be out-of-date. Still, it's hard to quibble about something like this, beyond the author's control.What is not hard to quibble about is Ms. Sobel's approach to her material. Unlike her previous book, this one is more idiosyncratic and personal. The conceits she uses to approach each chapter change. This leads to an uneven experience which depends on how the reader reacts to these conceits. For instance, I very much enjoyed the early chapters which seemed to me to be more personal and drawn from Ms. Sobel's own love of the solar system. On the other hand, I found the chapter on Mars--told from the point of view of a Mars meteorite found on earth--and the chapter on Uranus & Neptune--told in the form of a letter by Caroline Herschel--to be irritating. And the light tone of the book as a whole leaves the reader with a sense of only have touched on the solar system superficially when, in fact, there's quite a lot of good information here.I had the great pleasure of meeting Ms. Sobel and speaking to her briefly a couple days ago. As one would expect, she is charming and intelligent. And this book does have many charms which would likely appeal to someone who knows very little about the solar system; however, as I listened to her speak about The Planets, my only desire was to talk to her about Galileo's Daughter. It's sometimes difficult to be fair about a book when the author's previous books are so excellent; however, when a writer sets the bar high by her own work, she has to expect the expectations of her audience. And the fair judgement of this book is, it is uneven--good in places, less so in others--but still worth a read.
