Last year I visited Laos and the previous year it was Cambodia, and before these tourist trips I by Amazon (after first searching in book shops in Chiang Mai) had bought travelers guides printed by other firms than this actual Book. But when I later from Amazon received an Insight Guide for a third Country, I liked it so much, so that I then ordered the actual Insight Guides ”Laos & Cambodia”, to be used when next time visiting these Countries. What I especially like in the “Insight Guides” are their good Cards, that is Cards which among other for example also are showing Cities, and their names, of many of the Cities in the neighboring Countries, as many of the other travelling guides doesn’t do. And when I was in Laos it showed up that the travelling guide, “The Rough Guide to Laos”, which I then used, on the small Cards for each of the Counties in Laos, there not even were shown the Cities in the neighboring Counties. Very frustrating, especially when being a place and asking help about which way to go, and nobody understand a single word of what are told, and then not having the possibly by pointing on a Card, if the actual City should be laying in another Country or County, and then not are shown in the actual Card. All of my other traveler guides of course consist in being a single book for a single Country, but I’ve found this Book cowering 2 Countries to be fine. But concerning Angkor Vat, which is a big special visiting place, about this I bought an extra book which I read before the journey. As well as I know from my 5 “Insight Guides”, besides being the best travelers guides, when it comes to the Cards, they also are in the top of quality when we are talking about the Pictures, or the History. And actually I don’t owe a single total Historical Book about Laos, so in this Book there were some new Historical details which I first now heard, among other that during the Vietnam War, USA on Laos, that not was fighting, dropped around ½ Tons of air Bombs pr. Citizen; actual the World Record. And that yearly still around 300 Persons are killed or wounded by these Bombs. And concerning Cambodia we among other learns that when Vietnam crashed the Khmer Rouge, who among other had killed around 2 – 3 million Citizens, then during the following more than 20 years, USA, England, Thailand, and China, was sponsoring the Khmer Rouge for their fighting against Vietnam!Among other we in the book learn about the Mekong River, and the big Fish in the River, but actually I didn’t find mentioned something about the very strange and extremely big ones, which maybe more are kind of snakes or lizards than fish. A Thailand friend of mine, a chief Policeman, on a wall is having a big Picture, shoving many American soldiers (during Vietnam War, and probably by The Golden Triangle) standing holding such one, around 8 meter long (26 feet’s). And nearly each year we in the TV are seeing Thais and Laos standing by the Mekong waiting to see such one crossing the water surface. And each time this Picture makes me start thinking on the Chinese Snake figures we are seeing by all of the Temples. But if searching after special old places to visit in Laos, to me the number one is the ancient Luang Prabang City - by also reading in Thailand Historical Books - where I by a mistake, not yet have been, but is hoping soon to se. And by UNESCO World Heritage Site the Luang Prabang is considered the best preserved Town in Southeast Asia. But as the first place to visit in Cambodia it of course is Angkor, most known for the Angkor Vat. It is extremely large, and concerning Angkor, the book in the text, especially concerning its History, is telling us much, but here it would help with the small Card, covering Angkor, being bigger, and also more Pictures would for getting a better idea about the place. But of course we can buy single opening Cards where we are paying for getting into the very big district covering Angkor. When we were there 2 years ago we used many hours, by car driving, just travelling around in Angkor. A few years ago I read that Angkor Vat is the biggest Temple in the World, and 8 times as big as the number 2, which is a Temple in South America. And by being there is fantastic, by seeing so enormous many faces equal to the one on the front page, and where I previously thought that there only existed a single one, or a few such stone faces. And then instead it turned out to be the same big stone face anywhere, and on many places 4 faces pointing in the 4 different directions. And as a side remark it’s strange that back in History the Danes nearly 1,000 years ago concurred the German peninsula Rügen, and there they then found a big Good figure with 4 Faces, which they then crashed into the sea. But concerning Angkor, as written in the Book, there up to the year 1,300 ac. lived around 1 million Citizens, and many Historians writes that the big Kingdom then collapsed because of the transport and communication problems, and if they had Cars, then the World’s biggest City and Kingdom back there in 1,300 ac would not have collapsed. But there is much more in the History about the Khmers Kingdom between 800 and 1,300 ac. than what we possibly can get in this Book. But what I would call the number 2 place to visit in Cambodia is the Tonle Sap, Cambodia’s Great Lake. On the Card it looks like the River from the Lake to the Ocean is around 150 miles long, but when we were out in the Lave, we then were told that in some month each year there are connection between the Lake and the Ocean, so that they can sail to the Ocean and there from the Ocean comes water to the Lake. Probably due to a little different in the high position between the Lake and the Ocean, and then in the dry months then the Lake being a bit lower than the Ocean. But it was a strange around 60 miles long Lake to be sailing in, which we can’t get any ideas about by looking at the Card, or the Pictures in the Book. A Lake with shrubbery, and many remote nooks, where people are living in sailing wood Boats, and out in the middle of the Lake laying a bigger wood Boat with shopping and even rearing Crocodiles.I admit that I came with some side telling, besides what written in the Book, but in any case it’s an excellent traveler guide.

Insight Guides Laos and Cambodia (2013) is a sturdy, glossy, well organized 376 high quality page guide book. Colorful maps (including a helpful fold out map of Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia - great for calculating distances)and even more colorful pictures make this book beautiful to look at, but not suitable for lugging around in a backpack. The over abundance of photos makes the book heavy and limits actual travel information (which is what a traveler wants). However, the History sections, particularly The Rise and Fall of the Khmer, are fascinating reading along with sections on Population Society and Economy. Is Insight Guides Laos and Cambodia a good read? Yes. Could I use this as my sole guide book? No, but it will make a pretty coffee table book.

Need longer and more coverage of Cambodia

"insight Guide" books are the best. I bought my first book in 2011 when we went to Belize, Guatemala & the Yucatan. It was easy to reference during our trip. Easy to read. Full color photos & maps, Broken down into regions, the history, the people, weather, events, dos & don'ts, currency, hotels, transportation, restaurants, street food, laws. I wouldn't buy any other.

Excellent atlas. Update was necessary with the advance of molecular biology.Very good to study for board exam.I recommend it with no doubt

Very Resourceful

Great photos simple explanation

Fantastic atlas, with full colour pictures. Very helpful for an infectious disease registrar trying to learn some microbiology.

I'm an Infectious Diseases physician currently in an additional year of microbiology fellowship. I bought this book at begin of my fellowship in July and it has aided me well for plate round presentations, during day to day work and in general to point out growth characteristics, biochem's, API's to tech's, students. High quality photos of plates and gram stains. very complete with only rare bugs missing, which can't all be in there in fairness as otherwise this would be another huge and expensive book. Concept of book is superb, particular as concise as it is with short summaries point out essentials. I give it a 5 star from the perspective as a microbiology fellow. It is way to much for a medical student or even ID Fellow unless really, really interested in microbiology. Phanatastic for the micro path attending. The path residents found it usefull as well though.

Gaudi has found a forgotten war within a war we are forgetting—and brought it vividly to life. In this bizarro campaign of the First World War you find yourself rooting for the racially tolerant and adaptive Germans against the racist and hierarchical Brits. In what one might consider one of the most backward campaigns Gaudi identifies a number of “firsts”: first intercontinental flight (by zeppelin!), first bombardment by air of a naval vessel. I hadn’t heard of von Lettow-Vorbeck—only undefeated German general of WWI—before reading African Kaiser, but he drew some pretty famous names into his wake of his story: Churchill of course, but also Isak Dinesen (did they or didn’t they?), Botha, Jan Smuts, Lord Beaverbrooke (the model, as Gaudi reminds us, for Lord Cooper in Waugh’s Scoop), Herman Goring’s father, Hitler himself (who did not make a good impression on von Lettow). The fact that this story is so obscure makes it fascinating, but Gaudi’s knack for telling it makes it hugely enjoyable, a page turner, and well-worth reading in these centennial years of that war which, Gaudi makes us realize, is in many ways rather contemporary.

I agree with every word of the review that let me to read this book, by Michael Dirda of The Washington Post on March 15, 2017:The Washington PostBooks‘African Kaiser’: A sweeping military history that reads like a novelBy Michael Dirda March 15Let me say straight out that if all military histories were as thrilling and well written as Robert Gaudi’s “African Kaiser,” I might give up reading fiction and literary biography.Anyone interested in 20th-century culture is bound to spend some time thinking about World War I. Yet while most of us are aware of the horrors of trench combat and the thousands lying dead in Flanders fields where poppies blow, what about the war outside Europe? What about German East Africa? Until I read Gaudi’s book, almost all I knew was that Lord Greystoke fought “Huns” in “Tarzan the Untamed” and that the sinking of an enemy warship provided the climax for the movie “The African Queen.”Still, the war in Africa was more than a sideshow. A brilliant guerrilla strategist, Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck forged his fanatically loyal Schutztruppe — a small colonial infantry consisting of largely black soldiers — into “a highly efficient fighting force, aggressive and completely self-supporting,” and one that was “the first racially integrated army in modern history.” As von Lettow bluntly said, “Here in Africa we are all equal. The better man will always outwit the inferior and the color of his skin does not matter.” These words were not mere lip service, either: His actions show that he genuinely believed them.On his very first page Gaudi reveals his own awe of what von Lettow and his men accomplished:“Cut off from the world by the British blockade in what remained of Germany’s last colony . . . they marched through bush and jungle and swamp and thorn scrub pori. They clambered up mountains and across arid, rocky plateaus, mostly without shoes. Their rifles were ancient or captured from the enemy; their artillery a few naval guns scavenged off a gutted battleship in the fetid sluice of the Rufiji [River]. They attacked, retreated, advanced, attacked, retreated to fight again. And though vastly outnumbered by British, South African, Belgian, and Portuguese armies, they could not be caught or beaten.”“African Kaiser,” however, doesn’t just focus on these ragtag troops and their general. Gaudi tells us about Room 40 — center for British cryptography — and the history of zeppelins. We are given a brief account of the colonial wars in southern Africa. We learn myriad odd facts, such as the widespread belief that drinking sweet vermouth offered protection from malaria. Periodically, Gaudi veers off to recount the daring exploits of con artists, great white hunters and battleship commanders. To illustrate his hero’s character he even retells the story of Gylippus from Thucydides’ “History of the Peloponnesian War.” Under attack and blockade by the Athenians, Syracuse called on its ally Sparta for help. But the Spartans were themselves hard-pressed and could spare only one man, Gylippus. But that one man “by sheer force of personality and military skill” reorganized Syracuse’s army and “choosing the right moment to attack, turned the tide of the war against the Athenians.” As Gaudi points out and von Lettow’s operations repeatedly demonstrated, “in battle, numbers don’t matter as much as resolve.”Described only as a freelance writer living in Virginia, Gaudi writes with the flair of a latter-day Macaulay. He sets his scenes carefully and describes naval and military action like a novelist. His sentences are models of clarity and vivacity, sometimes further enlivened with wry authorial comments. The academically inclined, however, may fault his decision to eschew source notes. Caught up by Gaudi’s skillful storytelling, most readers aren’t likely to care.Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck came from a long line of soldiers. He was brought up with Prussian discipline, attended the military academy at Kassel, enjoyed reading philosophy and literature, mastered English, French and several African languages, and tasted first blood in China during mop-up operations following the Boxer Rebellion. After his service in Asia, von Lettow was assigned to German South West Africa during fierce uprisings by the Herero and Hottentots. In 1906, an exploding shell cost him the use of his left eye. But his experiences taught him that Africans “fought with the country rather than against it; they generally eschewed pitched battles and were extremely mobile, drawing heavily laden, plodding German soldiers on long, exhausting marches through waterless bush tangled with thorn scrub where German firepower could not be used with effectiveness.” He would later apply these lessons against the British.Back in Germany because of his eye injury, von Lettow worried that his career as a field officer was over. Eventually, though, he was given command of the 2nd Sea Battalion on the North Sea. Four years later, by now in his mid-40s, he was finally ordered to lead the small Schutztruppe in German East Africa, a colony that had earned the allegiance of its indigenous people through respectfulness and education. Typically, von Lettow immediately began to learn Swahili. En route to Dar es Salaam, he encountered a charming young Danish woman named Karen Blixen, with whom he shared a shipboard romance. Later during the war, Blixen — better known as Isak Dinesen, author of “Out of Africa”— used her admirer’s inscribed picture as a talisman against violence by German partisans. The second half of “African Kaiser” follows von Lettow’s guerrilla operations, as he outfoxes the British time and again. His aim was almost always tactical — through his commando raids he could assist the Fatherland’s larger war effort by compelling Britain to divert men and material to Africa. In the end, he would be the only undefeated German general of World War I and a recipient of his nation’s equivalent of the Medal of Honor. Amazingly, Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck lived on to oppose Hitler, survive another world war and die in 1964, just short of his 95th birthday.

Robert Gaudi has written a very readable popular biography of General Paul von Lettow, the German commander who led his colonial forces against a British colonial army in Africa during World War I. Using guerrilla tactics von Lettow tied up tens of thousands of British forces that could have otherwise been used, or at least supported, British war efforts in Europe of the Middle East.Like many books about important military men, the book is as much a biography as it is a historical account of the battles in which von Lettow fought. The book begins by examining von Lettow’s upbringing and his early military experience in Germany, against the Boxers in China, and against the Herero in German South West Africa. In many ways these experiences laid the groundwork for his later success in German East Africa where his background in logistics, unconventional warfare, and his ability to understand other cultures allowed him to fight the British for four years with minimal outside support. After reviewing von Lettow’s peace time career and life in between the time he left South West Africa until the beginning of World War I, the rest of the book covers the key events of the African theater of war. This includes his initial success at Tanga, the capture of the Konigsberg and his use of its former crew and guns to reinforce his land war, his guerrilla war against Britain’s colonial railway system in Kenya, his long fighting retreat into Africa’s interior until war’s end. Of interest is the friction between the German colony’s governor, who wanted to keep the colony neutral and out of the war, and von Lettow who believed the best way to serve Germany’s war efforts was to tie down as many British resources as possible in Africa; obviously von Lettow won that argument. The only issue I have with the book, keeping in mind the author is a freelance writer, is he sometimes is more interested in telling the story than he is in getting the facts straight. For example, he refers to the November 11, 1918 armistice as an unconditional surrender by Germany which magnifies his follow on phrase that von Lettow’s world, that he had loved, and his “astonishing” military career were gone forever. Also, at one point in the book Gaudi speculates that von Lettow had created a false report about the Konigsberg, but two pages later this speculation becomes a fact and the reason von Lettow’s ploy had worked. More interesting is the author’s use of Richard Meinertzhagen, a British officer, as a source periodically throughout the book, especially since Gaudi refers to him as “a colossal fraud” and spends time noting that Meinertzhagen has been discredited as a historical source. But Meinertzhagen had the ability to turn a colorful phrase, which obviously appealed to Gaudi.Having said that, I still recommend the book. It’s an enjoyable read, adds biographical information about von Lettow to the narrative, which is often overlooked in histories of his African efforts, and provides a good review of the war in Africa, particularly from the German perspective. This is an author who believes he's discovered something new, and his enthusiasm is evident in the book.

I ordered this book for my husband, for Christmas. He loved it! Not only are there lots of photos, but there are several very interesting stories about the oyster industry, too. Recipes and history make for a great book any oyster lover will appreciate!

It is a small book, but what a book. It contains fun and little-known facts, spectacular art work, and really awesome recipes. I grew up in the Northeast and remember home-made baked beans, Indian pudding, and baked stuffed quahogs. My mother's cooking is some of the best I ever tasted and I consider her one of the very best cooks. One of her best dishes is linguini with clams. I was so excited to see this and the afore-mentioned recipes included in this book. I was surprised, but delighted to see the recipe for steamed-mussels Basque-style. While the dialogue is poorly-written, the given information is fascinating. I agree with all the positive commentaries posted about this cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow. Items are easy to find in the glossary. And, the directions are simple, concise, and detailed. If you just love to cook and are looking for an excellent cookbook that offers home-style New England food fares, then this is the book for you. If you don't cook, but love displaying books on a coffee table, then this is a wonderful book to include. This book would make a great gift for any cooking enthusiast. If you have eaten at this restaurant and love it, you can serve your favorite dishes at home.

I ordered the "Union Oyster House Cookbook" as Holiday Gift for a true Bostonian sea food lover and New England recipe collector..When I placed the order on December 10 I saw the expected date for delivery was January 10 2015. I thought thatit might be sooner,, Unfortunately, it took that long to arrive and I could not include it as a 2014 Holiday Gift. The authentic recipesluscious photography and colonial to current history of the Union Oyster House rate 4 stars..It would have been 5 stars had therebeen a more speedy delivery..Along those lines the same order contained 2 other Boston heritage cookbooks ordered onthe December 10th and received on December 19th that I included in a gift basket of corn bread, baked beans andthe must have little brown and tan bean pot for a perfect Saturday night suppers

I visited the Union Oyster House a long time ago. . Was amazed what they did to Seafood. . Looked all over andfinally found this book. . . I cherish this book, its recipes, and no matter who asks me, I will not loan out this bookto anyone. . . Excellent Book sort of hard to find.Renee Evers

The Union Oyster House is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the country. When you think that Daniel Webster and John F. Kennedy were among some of the famous and frequent patrons here, you might just want to stop by just to drink in the history (no pun intended!) Surprise, surprise, the clam chowder is to die for! And now I have the recipe to duplicate it at home! Even if you don't plan to cook all the delicious seafood recipes represented in this cookbook, you'll enjoy reading the history, not only of the restaurant, but of the city where the birth of our nation began. Another added attraction to this book, when you need to come up with a good trivia question, you can ask where the toothpick was invented. In this cookbook/history book, you will be motivated to duplicate the simple, yet wonderful, seafood dishes that will impress and win you many compliments, and then while your guests enjoy each yummy bite, you can educate them about city of Boston, where it all began!

I visited Boston in September and for my birthday my eldest son and his wife took me to the Oyster House Restaurant. When I got home from my vacation I realized that I just had to have the Oyster House Cookbook and I've used a number of the recipes & have loved each and every one of them. It's a keeper.

I must have 50 different recipes for crab cakes. Union Oyster House is the easiest andbest flavor, of all mine. I did not even brown the cakes on the stove, merely cooked themin the oven. Delicious.

I am in food Heaven! The recipes are easy to follow and come out great! Love the pictures.

Can't go wrong with this history and these recipes. You need this on your cooking bookshelf!
