Having written software for 15 years for UNIX and Windows platforms, my move to the mobile space has been educational and humbling. Trying to learn to program for Symbian using the SDK and publicly available docs is daunting at best. The SDK docs are sparse, poorly written and provide a terrible search experience.In contrast, Symbian OS C++ for Mobile Phones provides a solid foundation for learning to program this relatively new breed of devices. It covers a lot of material in a fair amount of depth and will help newbies to ascend the steep learning curve. Without this book, those new to Symbian programming will need to scour the SDK docs, trawl the newsgroups, and rely on kind souls from the UK to help with their inevitable programming questions.I would have given this book 4 stars had it not been for several disappointing characteristics. First, there are too many authors. The writing style changes and information is repeated unnecessarily and in jarring ways. Second, the book sometimes repeats what's in the SDK docs, albeit in a consolidated form, without adding pragmatic insight and value. Third, it does not delve into some real-world, complex topics in any meaningful way. For example, the text quickly discusses messaging (SMS/MMS) but does not provide a digestible example of programmatically constructing an MMS. Fourth, it does not include Series 60 information, which is a shame given that the Series 60 is a very popular platform.All in all, this is a good book that provides relevant, helpful information that will flatten the learning curve considerably.

My title says it all. The book starts relativly good by giving an useful introduction into Symbian Programming and introducing the basic programming paradigms. I also like the chapter about how to avoid common pitfalls and about descriptors.After the example section the book goes to introduce the basic functionality of some libraries, but stays too much on the surface to deliver some advantage over reading the official documentation.Some examples (for example in the file system services part) also seem to be outdated.Not so much work seems to have gone into creating an index - it is overbloated with useless page citings. It seems as if somebody just took a number of keywords searched the document and added them directly to the index, even if the keyword at a page is not relevant at all. For example the keyword "UIDs" points to 19 different pages!My recommendation: For an introduction take a look at S60 Programming - A Tutorial Guide by Wiley (same publisher). I found that to be organized better for beginners. If you are beyond that stage, use the internet forums or the Symbian documentation.

If you were looking for a deeper discussion of Symbian for Mobile Phones than the "Programming the Series 60 platform and Symbian OS", you've come to the wrong place. "Different" would be a more accurate word. Part of the problem is that it was put together by agglomerating works from various ( 18 !) authors. The writing style shifts from first to third person and back a lot.The book rather briefly mentions Series 60 ( still the predominant UI among symbian-based smartphones ) and Series 80 ( Nokia Communicators ), and then moves on. All sample code provided by the authors ( downloadable from the books website ), is targeted strictly towards UIQ.While the number of subjects covered( UI, file system, memory handling, Bluetooth, communications ) serve their purpose, the book just seems too haphazardly composed to be easily digestable. At least they did provide a few small applets which demonstrate some of the subjects ( strings, simple drawing ) covered, before they present their version of the classic Battleship game ( which in it's favor does implement a communication stack for multiplayer use ).My ONE strong suggestion to the authors would've been not to ignore the Series 60 platform altogether. The last book for Series 60 left a lot of room for the authors of this book, to have tied the loose ends that the SDK leaves open, together.

I ordered this book because I was new to Symbian/UIQ. I found it easier and more convenient to use than the SDK on-line doc.I appreciate the battleship case-study used to illustrate the basic and intermediate Symbian/UIQ concepts. It helped me a great deal. This book also focuses on UIQ application framework. But surprisingly, I found it very scarce (as much as the SDK) on some aspects of the application framework: embedded application programming, command-line parameters processing.However still good to have it close at hand for when I need a quick info.

This has been - by far - the most disappointing travel guide I've read in a long time. I found the 'Top Tens' chosen for the book often uninteresting, but most importantly, so many things were missing - most of all practical information. I am glad that this wasn't the only travel guide I brought to Cuba, I would've missed a whole bunch of amazing experiences and places in this fascinating country.The worst part was that there were NO maps included in the Kindle version, only links to Google Maps, but there's barely any wifi in Cuba, and so for the few recommendations this book has that might have been good (restaurants for example), it was completely useless without the maps and a way to find the place they were talking about.Stick to the Rough Guide or the Lonely Planet for your trip to Cuba, the Top 10 Cuba was a waste of money.

This was about the 50th book I have read written by people who have hiked the long distance trails both here and abroad., and it has soared to the top of my favorites. Unlike so many that were mere chronicles of fellow hikers, stops and meals, this author made the journey complete with his emotions concerning the enchantment and the hardships he faced daily. The reader could sense throughout how the trail was molding him into someone he never dreamed he could be. I am not, nor can I be, a hiker. I am a 74 year old woman confined to a wheelchair who lives the hikes of others vicariously. This was an exceptional journey that affected me profoundly, and I hope that Mayor will achieve his goals of hiking the PCT and the ADT, and I hope that he will invite me along via new books about them.

Great read. Thoroughly enjoyed entire book. Hats off to the author. The guy is a beast! The book gave an excellent representation of what to expect taking on this massive endeavor. His writing doesn't drone on; it is easy to follow and wonderfully discriptive. The only aspect I would change is to leave out the unnecessary "F-bombs". I say this not as a prude. Rather it would be more acceptable for younger readers looking for inspiration and adventure.

Slowly, as time passes, I have been reading my way through books dealing with accounts of individuals documenting their adventures through-walking the great long distance trails our country have to offer. I must say that in many ways this account by a very young man; Kyle Rohrig, is at the top of the heap.My long distance hiking is at an end due to advanced age and health condition so I now set back and enjoy the adventures of others via the written word.This is an honest book and Kyle pulls few, if any, punches. He more or less tells it like it is. I appreciated his honesty and felt it gave a wonderful account of both the high and low points of his great adventure.Now several things must be taken into account when reading this work and works by other hikers. The first is that each and every experience of each individual hiker will be different. You can take any give one thousand hikers and in the end will have one thousand different stories.Now a few have been critical of this work – very few I note. It must be remembered that this is a very young man – he is around 24 or 24 at the time of his hike and writing of this book. Wow – so many in this generation skulk in their parent’s basement and play video games 24/7 – how remarkable Kyle is. It should also be remembered that Kyle is NOT a professional author. We are not talking Hemingway here. That being said though, for an young and unpublished author, this young man did a much better job than many, many older and more experienced writers. Yes, he needs a bit of polish here and there but hey – everyone has to start somewhere.His description of the country as he passes through is rather remarkable and rather sensitive when you consider his age. His unabashed ability to throw his feeling out for inspection by hundreds of readers is a gutsy thing to do – something I admire.Now would I have made some of the decision he made? At my age most certainly not. But than I am not so sure about it when I think back to when I was that age – sounded pretty typical to me.I enjoyed the stories of the little dog that made this journey with him. Taking his dog is something I personally would have never done but hey – it all worked out quite well for both Kyle and the dog.This is a good account and I enjoyed the read and recommend it for others interested in this subjec

I've read many AT books. All are pretty good, yet fairly ho hum, but once in a while one comes along that is uniquely different. This is one such book! Written from a very honest, personal perspective, Kyle captures the essence of hiking the AT - the beauty of nature, the spiritual, contemplative self-reflection and self-realization that a long distance hike invokes, along with the mental and physical transformations that take place in the hiker. As a long-time AT section hiker (900+ miles and counting), I can relate to everything "The Mayor" talks about - not just the actual physical hardships of climbing up and down mountains, which are described well - but the bonds that are formed with other hikers, comical moments on the trail, the art of and observations about hitchhiking, eccentric, if not downright scary people one runs into that make one realize how vulnerable a hiker is, shelters, mice, snakes, bears, food...it's all here! Throw in Katana, probably the cutest, coolest trail dog ever, and quite a hiker in her own right, and the cast of characters is complete!The Mayor's most personal, and profound observations, scattered throughout the book, and basically the underlying theme of the book, are summed up nicely at the end - "Human life is fleeting, and in the grand scheme of the universe, our existence doesn't even register. We have a short time with which to make the most of our lives...Learn to slow down and recognize more of these seemingly insignificant instances that are buried throughout the chaos of our lives, and you might find that extra bit of peace and happiness we are all searching for...". Right on, hiker brother! The highlights of life are truly found in the minutiae, the details. Hiking, which humbles a person down to his/her very basic human essence, opens the door to this realization. Kyle expresses this so well without glitz, fanfare or braggadocio. This is not only a story of a thru-hike, but a tale of the human spirit...the common denominator in us all. It's all about perspective, hiking and life in general. A must read for anyone, hiker and non-hiker alike.
