The blue zones: 9 lessons for living longer from the people who've lived the longest by Dan BuettnerStories of the different areas worldwide and strategies of how the people live with excellent health into triple digits. This book gives you options that you can select how far you want to go to your own longevity.Interesting to learn all the things that do effect our lives...Goat's milk is a food that might help, walk a bunch, whole grains, olive oil, fruits and beans are also clues. The one thing I found was to be with family, grandkids, etc it will keep you on your toes and others younger will look up to you, respect you. It does keep you young.Power naps for 30 mins, herbal teas lower blood pressure. Each of the zones has their own specialty. it's what works for them.Loved hearing how they discover a blue zone-all the numerology involved. I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

My Rating – Must ReadLevel – Easy read, medium length, but reads quicklySummaryBlue zones, so named because while researching the first one, a blue circle was drawn around they area under discussion, are areas in the world where people live the longest. Not only do they live longer, but live better as centenarians (100 year olds) then many people much younger do in other parts of the world. The book takes us through the four blue zones, and shares interviews, history, diets and other fact about the life of the people who live there. The four blue zones are – Sardinia, Okinawa, Loma Linda (California) and Costa Rica. They have since discovered another one in Greece. The final chapter gives the tips they found in common in all the blue zones so that you can create your own ‘blue zone.’• Move Naturally – Everyone studied for the book was extremely active. They walked miles a day, gardened, etc. His point is no one has to run marathons or become powerlifter, you just need to move often.• Hara Hachi Bu – A phrase said by the Okinawans before every meal reminding them to eat until they feel 80% full. Calorie restriction has been shown to be very important in longevity.• Plant Slant – With the exception of the Adventist in Loma Linda, no one was a vegetarian. However, they all ate meet rarely, anything from once a week to only a few times a year.• Grapes of Life – Wine. It plays a big role for the Sardinians and the Okinawans drink Sake, but the others consumed no alcohol. Either way, studies have shown a drink or two a day, especially of wine is beneficial to your health.• Purpose Now – Having a sense of purpose, or a reason to get up in the morning, something that drives you.• Down Shift – taking time to relax, meditate or slow down and enjoy life.• Belong –To a community, but a part of something bigger than yourself. Religious communities, regardless of which one, have been shown to help people live longer.• Loved Ones First – Relatedly, take time to cultivate relationships and spend time with friends and family. Prioritizing social life is something we really fail at in America.• Right Tribe – People who share common goals and healthy lifestyle. Many studies have shown that who you hang out with has a huge impact on your lifestyle. Have an obese friend increases your chances of becoming overweight. Seek people who have the same above traits in mind.My ThoughtsThings like this are utterly fascinating to me. Both of my granddads are currently 91 years old and show only a few signs of stopping. Much of their life has included most of the traits. Modern America has us moving further and further away from these things. We eat lots of cheap, processed food. We don’t spend much time with friends or family. We do not rest often. We don’t move. I’m currently writing this at my desk, I spend far too many hours a day sitting at a desk and wondering how I can move.Adopting as much of the Blue Zone lifestyle will not only help you to live longer, but the time you do spend will be better and healthier.(...)

A great book. The fact that it has the credentials of National Geographic behind it carries a lot of weight in terms of the accuracy of the data being well researched. I have read other books on the Mediterranean Diet, and on the centenarians of Okinawa and Sardinia. This book added a great deal to other things I’ve read, describing more specifically where these concentrated Blue Zones are located, which are the concentrated areas where the centenarians are found. One particular thing I applaud Dan Buettner for is that in Sardinia, for example, they wanted to find an example of a “younger” person who was living in the traditional way so they could see how some of these centenarians had likely lived as they aged, and so they followed a vibrant 75 year old shepherd named Tonino Tola around his farm, and documented the amazingly long hard hours this man labored everyday and how he ate.The book gives many specific examples of centenarians, how they lived, their activities, diet, life style. And it gives many examples of research and theories being studied to understand how these people’s lives reached the long healthy lives they have enjoyed, yet, it is not overly technical and very readable.

Absolutely loved this book. I had to order last minute for a class. Had to have a few chapters read in two days and I didn't have the book yet! Did amazon prime, got it ASAP and read it in time for my assignment. I have been implementing things I learned about the lifestyles of the centenarians ever since, and I feel better than ever! Can't wait to continue these lifestyle choices, and hopefully become a centenarian myself :)

This book is wonderful and easy to read. It's full of relateable stories and everyday people just living their lives. Dan really gets down to the distinct characteristics of each Blue Zone and what makes their way of life special. This book made a real impact on my understanding of how the choices you make and what you do each day affects your outcome in life. I came away with so many small changes that I can easily incorporate into my days. I look at the choices I make with food and exercise in a new light and view my reasons for getting up in the morning with a new lens. It was wonderful to see how other pockets in the world-and even one in California- defines their successes and priorities with such a wonderful result. Definitely changed my life- for the better. I gave my father-in-law and my mom this book to share the stories.

This is a Very interesting book. It really make you think about changing you life style. This book is very informative and eye opening I have begun to make changes in the way I eat. I am try to use less and less sugar. I have given up diet drinks and I'm drinking more water daily. I am eating healthier meals. This book my change my life and help me live longer. I recommend it to all.

If you grew up in Chicago during the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s (before the arrival of "Great America" caught on), you will want to read the history of this awesome landmark! AMAZING pictures that help bring back a LOT of memories of this amusement park that entertain millions of families in the area. Made me miss the feel of a small amusement park.

As a former village employee I enjoyed all the pictures and Mr Wenz' s recollections. I didn't give five stars because I didn't think it was very well written. Any former employees or guests(of any of the three locations) would probably like the reminders of a magical time and place.

I remember Santa's Village when I was growing up & wanted to bring back my childhood !!! Thanks for an enjoyable book !!!

I first heard about Santa's Village (near Santa Cruz) in the 1960's, from a children's magazine ("Highlights for Children"?), but - mom said it was too far too drive, so we never went there. We lived 1/2 hour from Disneyland, so of course I was (and remain) a monorail fan, and I never knew there was a Santa's Village much closer to us (Skyforest) with the same "BumbleBee" monorail ride as Scott's Valley.Unfortunately, this book is written by people from the Santa's Village in Dundee, IL., so there are no photos - or even mention of the BumbleBee, which I never got to see or ride. Other than that, it's a refreshing look at a bygone era; a simpler time, when Disney was NOT the only one with a vision of kids and parents having fun together.

This book brings back so many wonderful memories of the Dundee Santa's Village!! The snowball ride to the Frozen ice pole at the North Pole! Love this book!

Very nicely done. Excellent photo selection throughout the book. The captions are very informative. Having been Santa at the park for many years, the author is an authority on Santa's Village and his expertise shines through.

Beautiful collection of memories. Would like one in color.

This was a gift. I was told he loved it ;)

Watched for sons school project.

Wilson Rawls’ classic, timeless story of a young boy’s coming-of-age is heartbreaking, sentimental, and utterly charming. An ode to love, family and the beauty of nature. Set in the Ozarks, northeastern Oklahoma, Billy wants nothing more than to have a puppy, or to be more specific, two puppies. He wants to train them for hunting, although his mother has forbidden him to use or own a gun until he is 21 or older. For two years he waits, collecting enough money doing whatever jobs he can, he finally raises enough for two puppies who are delivered via train to the town closest to where he lives."I knelt down and gathered them into my arms. I buried my face between their wiggling bodies and cried. The stationmaster, sensing something more than two dogs and a boy, waited in silence."My Dad didn’t grow up in the Ozarks, but he trapped animals as a young boy to raise money for a dog. Selling skins to Sears Roebuck & Co. was enough then to fulfill that dream and then later to get him enough money to fly enough hours to be conscripted (after being declared 4F) to train pilots at Americus, Georgia. When he was able to return to being a civilian pilot, the first thing he did with the money he saved was to buy another dog. On multiple levels, I felt this story to be so close to my father’s, both coming from rural, impoverished areas.“Men, said Mr. Kyle, “people have been trying to understand dogs ever since the beginning of time. One never knows what they’ll do. You can read every day where a dog saved the life of a drowning child, or lay down his life for his master. Some people call this loyalty. I don’t. I may be wrong, but I call it love – the deepest kind of love.”This is such a wonderful story; I highly recommend you read it. Re-read it, if you read it as a child.

This story was riveting! We did a road trip with our grandchildren, so we purchased the audio version and listened as we drove. The story kept the constant attention of both children and us as adults. The author has a great ability to paint a picture with his words and the reader for the audio version brought those words to life! There were some pretty graphic portions as fights between animals took place but our grandchildren were not put off by it...they wanted to keep listening. The story opened opportunities for some great conversations. We would love to see the movie made from this book, but honestly, I don't know how the movie could stack up against the book. So many details of the author's descriptions could be lost.

Somehow I never read this book as a child. I wish I had, so I could compare how it affected me then versus now as a grandma. The story is active and intense, with fantastically detailed descriptions of Billy's adventures with his dogs. I think only an author who grew up in the mountains and experienced nighttime hunting and an untethered freedom to roam, as Billy - and Wilson Rawls - did, could have written this book. In some senses, the story is dated, both because it was published in 1961 and because the setting is an isolated farm in the Ozarks around 1920. For example, "womenfolk" are regarded as opaque and overly emotional (Billy's three sisters aren't even named in the book, though they play a role). Animals are often considered dispensable, and the repeated descriptions of coon hunting and coon killing are gory (and the family cat's injuries are ridiculed). Personal grief is something to ignore or to rebound from quickly. However, the book seems true to its time and place, and in any historical fiction the world will be different from our own. Anyone who's loved a dog will relate to Billy's deep bond with his hounds. I enjoyed the adventure, and I savored Billy's astonishing descriptions of his life with Old Dan and Little Ann.

I bought this book to try and bring back an old time classic family tradition. I have 4 sons that are 13, 11, 6 and 2 years old. I wanted to recreate a lost tradition from the past by reading a story to my children on Sunday nights. With all the ipods, ipads, xboxes and PS3's and other "stuff" I felt like families easily drift apart. So I called everyone to the living room just last night and told them to put their "toys" away and be quiet. I began reading this old story that I love so much. At first I was greeted with yawns and poking one another but after about 10 minutes or so the boys were quiet. Next thing I knew I had read for an hour and was calling it quits after chapter 4. The kids began PLEADING with me to read one more chapter. I caved and read one more chapter. They pleaded at the end of that chapter to read one more chapter again but this time I wanted to leave them hanging and simply said, "next Sunday." This story is such a great story about a boy and his dream of owning hound dogs and becoming a hunter. IT's a wonderful reminder of how little in life we really need and how much love we can have for the very little and small things in life. It expresses what hard work and determination will get you if you dream big and then work hard for it and maybe ask for a little help from God. I am so happy I bought this book. It is a priceless addition to our bookshelf at home.
