Who Ordered This Truckload of Dung?: Inspiring Stories for Welcoming Life's Difficulties, by Ajahn Brahm

From Publishers Weekly

More than statistics and theories, we really trust anecdotes and narratives. Our brains and beings are wired to learn deeply and easily via stories, and this splendid collection of 108 Buddhist-based tales proves the point with lasting, gentle, pervasive teachings. Brahm, a former Cambridge University theoretical physics scholar, was ordained in Bangkok at age 23 and spent nine subsequent years in forest meditation under Venerable Ajahn Chah. He is now an abbot and spiritual director of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia. In the dozen compelling and practical sections on topics like perfection, love, commitment, fear, pain, anger, forgiveness, happiness, freedom and humility, he weaves a long, rich tapestry of understanding using short threads of stories only a couple of pages long. Many tales lead one to the other, but each also stands alone. Resurrecting several "chestnuts" as well as crafting new stories, Brahm avoids the pitfall of esoteric, inscrutable renderings sometimes found in Buddhist writing. Instead, without compromising integrity, he favors modern cadences and references (e.g., iPods and the World Wildlife Fund) to make the stories sail along. Especially resonant if slowly savored, this is a wonderful collection that can be enjoyed by a broad audience. (Oct.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review

"One of The Best Spiritual Books of 2005... Entertaining and spiritually edifying; the author has a fine sense of humor and these tales are sure to speak to your condition. While savoring them, we realized that the author has given it everything that he has, and the end result is a volume brimming with humor, humanity, and good will." (Spirituality and Health / Spirituality and Practice)"Ajahn Brahm spins a good yarn--108 of them here--drawing on teaching stories he heard as a student of Ajahn Chah, one of the great masters of the Thai forest tradition, and on personal anecdotes from his more than thirty years as a Buddhist monk. Ajahn Brahm is originally from London, and his working-class humor and cockney turns of phrase can be charming. Between the classical Buddhist stories and the homespun advice, you'll get a good sense of who this teacher is, and why so many people are drawn to hear him speak about Theravada Buddhism." (Shambhala Sun)"More than statistics and theories, we really trust anecdotes and narratives. Especially resonant if slowly savored, this is a wonderful collection that can be enjoyed by a broad audience." (Publishers Weekly)"Masterly storytelling and Dharma teaching, beautifully and effectively combined. The tales are at times hilarious, at times poignant; often both." (Larry Rosenberg, Senior Teacher, Insight Meditation Center and Cambridge Insight Meditation Center, and author of Breath by Breath)"This is a book that is destined to become dog-earred and cherished and read aloud to one's friends and family. It will fall apart from your attention, I promise you! It's crammed with pithy, modern 'Buddhist Tales of Happiness' that cleverly relate the wisdom of Buddha's teachings in a poignant, funny, and profound way." (Mandala)"Ajahn Brahm is one teacher one can never be bored listening to. His talks on Buddhism in Malaysia and Singapore have always attracted record crowds. Newcomers to Buddhism are always fascinated by how he easily he is able to explain difficult concepts in ordinary language the mind can grasp. [He has become] the great storyteller...What we have here is a collection of 108 stories and anecdotes comprising the best of Ajahn Brahm's inspirational tales. ...Many stories in this volume are true-to-life tales that help us to develop a deeper understanding of mindfulness, compassion, and wisdom. Indeed, after reading the book, I believe we will all open the doors of our hearts to more goodness, kindness, and happiness." (Eastern Horizon)"Ajahn Brahm follows in the widespread tradition of turning to stories--some folk tales, some personal experiences--to teach life's most important lessons. What's remarkable about this collection is that whether he is relating a tale about painful emotions, difficult relationships (including with ourselves), or even going through airport security, he touches on the universals of human experience with wisdom and wit so that we may confront our foibles with disarmingly gentle humor." (Jean Smith, author of NOW!, and editor of 365 Zen)"Ajahn Brahm is a happy, wise and inspiring man. My Mum, a devout Anglican, says Who Ordered This Truckload of Dung? is so good she takes it to bed with her each night!" (Rachel Green, communication specialist and Emotional Intelligence coach)

Excellent! Superb! Wonderful! There are not enough positive adjectives to describe this book, I LOVED it. Brahm writes with such ease, the stories are easy to understand with terrific life lessons that I have already started applying to my life. Initially when I bought the book, I though I would read it and pass along, but it is so good, I'm planning on keeping it in my permanent collection and giving other copies as gifts (it was that good).Brahm, an abbot, became a Buddhist monk early in life, after growing up in England and getting a physic's degree from Cambridge. The way he writes, I suspect is the way he speaks and it is such a kind and comfortable tone; making you want to have him as a friend or someone you could pour your heart out too.The stories/lessons that particularly touched me were about laughing when you get angry or upset, anticipation makes fear/pain, creating happiness through laughter and taking oneself so seriously, and stop wasting our lives worrying about things, problems that have no solution? The book is super easy to read, I recommend everyone read it at least once!

Wisdom for the ages. I really enjoyed reading the life experiences and just downright good stuff from Ajahn Brahm. I am a Christian, but found extremely great advice for anyone whether Christian, Buddhist and everyone in between. The humor and humanity is great. A must have for all kinds of life situations.

Ajahn Brahm has really changed my life with his many wise teachings of Buddhism.

I have grown wary of paperback books because many are printed on cheap paper, apparently by a worn out old printing press. It makes them a strain on the eyes. This delightful book by Ajahn Brahm contains enlightening stories from his lectures. Some are repeats of ones in other books, but they are all worth reading over and over until it sinks in. Its nice to have for that bedtime read to settle the nerves and close the eyes with peaceful thoughts.

Am reading it for the second time...full of wise Buddhist oriented anecdotes with a great deal of humor included. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for personal growth.

This is a well written inspiring book; don't need to be a Buddhist to appreciate the humorous stories. A quick read, perfect for someone who needs a laugh or inspiration.

This book was recommended by a Doctor, the stories are inspiring, humerous and send messages thru the story--telling the reader if you want change/ work for it! I recommend it to anyone, but specifically for those who are having a hard time with life in general. If you want to see and grow a beautiful flower-- then don't put a rock on top of the seed preventing the growth...

A wonderful collection of stories that share wisdom and insight with each reading. I actually bought this 2nd copy to give as a wedding gift because the stories help us get along with one another. Ajahn Brahm is a Western (from England) Buddhist monk hugely popular in Australia and SE Asia. He trained in Thailand for 8 years and started a monastery in western Australia. He is an excellent story teller. Quite direct, often funny, He has genuine wisdom to share. You do not need to be Buddhist or know anything at all about Buddhism to appreciate these stories. They are for everyone, everywhere.

I finally finished this book! I took it slow so that I could enjoy learning more about the Savior from this book, and it was a blessing to me, because even though I've read the New Testament many times, I learned so much from reading Talmage's book. I enjoyed it so much, and all the consummate research he did, that I actually went and got some of the sources he got much of his material from and put them on my Kindle. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to understand more about not just Jesus' life but his pre-mortal existence and his importance in our own lives. Most of the scholarship which Talmage used was actually from non-Mormon sources (the ones I got to read were both Christian and Judaic). So this book is for anyone who has an interest in learning more about the Savior. This is not a book you want to read quickly, or you will miss so many important concepts. I read all of the notes at the back of each chapter as well, and often there were little snippets of information in the notes that I did not know. I will have to read this book again, to extract as much information as possible, but it definitely made me more knowledgeable of Jesus the Christ.

This is a LONG, long work, and not one that should be "skimmed." It is, by far, the finest work on the life of the Savior, anywhere. Whether a Latter-day Saint or not, the insights about Jesus Christ are marvelous, and any Christian not of the LDS faith would still be greatly uplifted and educated by it, even disregarding the occasional specific references to Latter-day Saint doctrine. For the vast majority of the book, that is simply not an issue - it is biblically-based, with insights one will be hard pressed to find elsewhere. The research and understanding behind the book is almost unbelievable, thus the tremendous insights on the Savior, his circumstances, and the world in which He lived at the time. For a non-LDS Christian, it would be helpful to know before starting, just a little about LDS beliefs about Jesus Christ, so that the book will make even more sense. Latter-day Saints do not typically use the word "Trinity" to refer to the Godhead. The LDS belief is that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are separate and distinct beings, but entirely united in one single purpose, under the direction of the Father, who is known in the Old Testament Hebrew as Elohim. Jesus Christ, as recorded in the Bible, was the creator of this earth, under the direction of the Father, and was known in his pre-mortal state as Jehovah (the God most frequently referred to in the Old Testament, but still always under the direction of Elohim). Once he came to the earth, he became known as Jesus Christ, and he routinely deferred to his Father (Elohim) when talking about his own works - saying that although he did them, he also only did what he was commanded by the Father, and/or what would be acceptable to the Father. Once resurrected, he resumed his place at the right hand of the Father, having redeemed the world He had created. The Bible itself clearly distinguishes between the three separate (but one in purpose) beings, such as Steven looking up steadfastly into heaven and seeing Jesus Christ on the right hand of the Father; or when he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane for the cup to be taken from him, but then deferred fully to the Father's will; or when he asked on the cross, "Why hast thou forsaken me?" He also promised to send "another Comforter" (the Holy Ghost) after He (Christ) was gone. And those are just some of the biblical examples that clearly distinguish between the three. Once that difference is understood between Latter-day Saints and SOME who adhere to other denominations of Christianity, this wonderful book makes even more sense. But even for one convinced of the three-in-one, one-in-three concept, the insights to be gained from "Jesus the Christ" are not to be found elsewhere, in their depth. It is a deeply moving spiritual experience. I also highly recommend obtaining it on DVD and listening to it, in addition to reading it. New and different insights emerge from the spoken word, compared to what is found in the printed word. James E. Talmage clearly had an understanding of the Savior that is rare to be found on this earth.

I originally read this book as a full-time missionary in 1979. It took me about 6 months to read and comprehend it. While it is not an "easy read," it is the best non-scripture doctrine book I have ever read. It helped me grow closer to my Savior and appreciate Him as my personal Redeemer.

Absolutely the worst publication of a book I have ever seen!Has anyone seen a Book of 349 pages and 42 chapters withNO Table of Contents, Chapter Headings, Index or Footnotes???!!!!You must scroll though every page and chapter to get to one Passage you want to read. IMPOSSIBLE!In my opinion, his publication is obviously a QUICK PRINT of a very Lovely and Sacred book. I hope other publishers take note! Very disappointed. This is a complete disappointment this publication is obviously a Quick Print of a very Lovely and Sacred book. Very sad and disappointing.

For some reason, the publisher decided to ink the cover of this book on TOP of the plastic veneer. I bought this book less than 2 months ago, haven't even finished reading it, and the gold ink that the title, border and author's name are written in is already rubbing off. I can scratch it off with my fingernail with hardly any effort. I figure by the time I'm done reading it, the book will be unidentifiable, with nothing left but the picture on the front. VERY annoyed, as this book is otherwise very well put together, and I spent the extra money on this edition because I wanted a nice copy that would last me for decades. If I knew then what I know now, I would not have bought this edition.

The book itself is a classic: a very thorough exploration of the life and mission of Jesus Christ, based in scripture, and incorporating the best scholarly studies available to Talmage in the early twentieth century. I bought this digital version to run on my Kindle Touch. It contains fewer typos than most digital transcriptions from classic titles. On my limited-ability Kindle, the footnotes appear at the end of each subheading simply as part of the "printed page" rather than as click-on links, but that didn't bother me.

This is the best overview and in-depth coverage of the 8 fold path of yoga as well as the nature of the mind, I have come across. The book is a goldmine of useful insights and information that presents a clear and balanced path to greater balance and happiness in life. Well worth the money. I will definitely be buying his other books.

I love the way Dr. Frawley writes. I enjoy all of his books and this one is no exception. When one understands the elements and their manifestation, one gets a clearer understanding of the mind and how it operates. Excellent intro for anyone interested in a holistic view of psychology or a more empowering way of understanding our thoughts.

Sooooo much good stuff in this book that I can't begin to write a proper review. This condenses many may potent yoga teachings naturally in the context of applied ayurvedic psychology. Even if you're not in to ayurvedic eating, this puts perspective into how different meditation practices can be selected to balance out the mind.

I thought this book was incredibly fascinating and very well written. It is not an easy read and I'm sure I'll need to read it a few more times to really get it, but I am always looking for alternative approaches to psychological treatments, and this book delivers. It brings my love for psychology, spirituality and Ayurveda together and delves deeper into all those aspects.

Very informational... found it difficult to read, but insightful. This book is not geared toward beginners. You have to have some knowledge about Ayurveda or you will be reading the chapters 2 , or 3 times in order to grasp a clear understanding.

The author describes the psychological aspect of ayurveda in a very precise yet easily understandable to all...however he could have focused a bit more on the physical aspects at the start for the western world...

Great book!

Insightful and clearly written book of the levels of mind. Great book for both those new in and for those familiar with Ayurveda. It's also useful for those interested in the Yogic philosophy and psychology. I love all the books by Dr. David Frawley, and this is one of those great books. It accompanies well with his other book on the subject "Yoga and Ayurveda - Self-healing and Self-realization". I would definitely recommend reading these both. These books are worthy of reading for both yogic and ayurvedic practitioners.
