There's so much to rave about when it comes to this book. It's the exhibition catalog of an unprecedented show that is only being held at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, so if you can't attend the show, this book is a perfect portal to the exciting scholarship and gorgeous items on display. What makes the show so unprecedented, you ask? Well, it's the first exhibition about the Pre-Raphaelites to ever display their works of art in conjunction with the Medieval and Renaissance works of art that inspired them. Seems like a no-brainer, doesn't it? Well, no one had ever done it before, and curator Melissa Buron went through quite a lot of negotiations to get some of the artworks for the show, artworks that NEVER leave their home museums because they are considered far too precious to travel. (We're talking PRB works, but also Italian renaissance masters, Northern Renaissance masters, medieval books, etc.)The show was dazzling, and it's only fitting that the book itself should be, too. And honestly, the book is absolutely ravishing. The production design is evocative, with textured, colored paper, and high quality images. The scholarship presented within is also both compelling and highly readable. It provides one of the most well-rounded and modern looks at the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood in print today--including a look at female artists working in the same milieu, as well as a good discussion about why the term "pre-raphaelite" is perhaps a misnomer. It's a perfect companion to the show, and will prove rewarding every time you open it. If you can't make it to the show, this is one catalog that really does justice to the objects on view. You can tell the curators poured their hearts and souls into this exhibition, as well as this beautifully bound catalog. (This is all coming from someone who isn't even that interested in the Pre-Raphaelites at all, but was still completely blown away by the show AND the book!)
I had been looking forward all summer long for this exhibition at "The Palace of the Legion of Honor" in San Francisco, Ca. The paintings that I had seen in books of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood have always been favorites of mine since Jr. High school and I had planned to take my god-daughter to see this show as her first museum experience (she is a natural artist), for a wonderful outing together to share the joy. Alas - a family emergency kept both of us away from going anywhere for months. The exhibition closed on September 30th, 2018. I started to look on Amazon hoping to find a copy of the catalogue, could not, but I was very glad to find this well written book about the show, comparing and contrasting the great artists of the Medieval and Renaissance era's to the Pre-Raphaelite artists, which was the purpose of the exhibition. I haven't finished the book yet, but the photographs are lovely. It is a beautifully made book with high quality paper and quality printing and binding. It really emphasizes just how much we missed an incredible opportunity to see these in person. Some of my long favorite paintings were in the exhibition and are fairly large and a picture in a book isn't the same as standing in front of them, taking time to just absorb the details and beauty of all of these artists. I understand that many of these items are in private collections so that even going to Britain in person won't allow me to see all of them. This book is beautiful and I would recommend it to anyone who loves art for a new perspective of these amazing artists.
I usually don't buy books on museum exhibits, but this book was a must have, on a once in a lifetime exhibition. Not only were the greatest pre-Raphaelite paintings there, but they were displayed alongside the art that influenced them! What a treasure, in every sense. It is an unique book, on an unforgettable exhibit.
I bought this book in preparation for seeing the Truth and Beauty Exhibit at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. The images are stunning and the history of the movement really enhanced the experience of seeing the Pre-Rapaelites in person. I've returned to the book several times now and enjoy revisiting the painting and other art forms included in the book.
