From Publishers Weekly
More than statistics and theories, we really trust anecdotes and narratives. Our brains and beings are wired to learn deeply and easily via stories, and this splendid collection of 108 Buddhist-based tales proves the point with lasting, gentle, pervasive teachings. Brahm, a former Cambridge University theoretical physics scholar, was ordained in Bangkok at age 23 and spent nine subsequent years in forest meditation under Venerable Ajahn Chah. He is now an abbot and spiritual director of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia. In the dozen compelling and practical sections on topics like perfection, love, commitment, fear, pain, anger, forgiveness, happiness, freedom and humility, he weaves a long, rich tapestry of understanding using short threads of stories only a couple of pages long. Many tales lead one to the other, but each also stands alone. Resurrecting several "chestnuts" as well as crafting new stories, Brahm avoids the pitfall of esoteric, inscrutable renderings sometimes found in Buddhist writing. Instead, without compromising integrity, he favors modern cadences and references (e.g., iPods and the World Wildlife Fund) to make the stories sail along. Especially resonant if slowly savored, this is a wonderful collection that can be enjoyed by a broad audience. (Oct.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review
"One of The Best Spiritual Books of 2005... Entertaining and spiritually edifying; the author has a fine sense of humor and these tales are sure to speak to your condition. While savoring them, we realized that the author has given it everything that he has, and the end result is a volume brimming with humor, humanity, and good will." (Spirituality and Health / Spirituality and Practice)"Ajahn Brahm spins a good yarn--108 of them here--drawing on teaching stories he heard as a student of Ajahn Chah, one of the great masters of the Thai forest tradition, and on personal anecdotes from his more than thirty years as a Buddhist monk. Ajahn Brahm is originally from London, and his working-class humor and cockney turns of phrase can be charming. Between the classical Buddhist stories and the homespun advice, you'll get a good sense of who this teacher is, and why so many people are drawn to hear him speak about Theravada Buddhism." (Shambhala Sun)"More than statistics and theories, we really trust anecdotes and narratives. (Publishers Weekly)"Masterly storytelling and Dharma teaching, beautifully and effectively combined. The tales are at times hilarious, at times poignant; often both." (Larry Rosenberg, Senior Teacher, Insight Meditation Center and Cambridge Insight Meditation Center, and author of Breath by Breath)"This is a book that is destined to become dog-earred and cherished and read aloud to one's friends and family. It will fall apart from your attention, I promise you! It's crammed with pithy, modern 'Buddhist Tales of Happiness' that cleverly relate the wisdom of Buddha's teachings in a poignant, funny, and profound way." (Mandala)"Ajahn Brahm is one teacher one can never be bored listening to. His talks on Buddhism in Malaysia and Singapore have always attracted record crowds. Newcomers to Buddhism are always fascinated by how he easily he is able to explain difficult concepts in ordinary language the mind can grasp. [He has become] the great storyteller...What we have here is a collection of 108 stories and anecdotes comprising the best of Ajahn Brahm's inspirational tales. ...Many stories in this volume are true-to-life tales that help us to develop a deeper understanding of mindfulness, compassion, and wisdom. Indeed, after reading the book, I believe we will all open the doors of our hearts to more goodness, kindness, and happiness." (Eastern Horizon)"Ajahn Brahm follows in the widespread tradition of turning to stories--some folk tales, some personal experiences--to teach life's most important lessons. What's remarkable about this collection is that whether he is relating a tale about painful emotions, difficult relationships (including with ourselves), or even going through airport security, he touches on the universals of human experience with wisdom and wit so that we may confront our foibles with disarmingly gentle humor." (Jean Smith, author of NOW!, and editor of 365 Zen)"Ajahn Brahm is a happy, wise and inspiring man. My Mum, a devout Anglican, says Who Ordered This Truckload of Dung? is so good she takes it to bed with her each night!" (Rachel Green, communication specialist and Emotional Intelligence coach)

Excellent! Superb! Wonderful! There are not enough positive adjectives to describe this book, I LOVED it. Brahm writes with such ease, the stories are easy to understand with terrific life lessons that I have already started applying to my life. Initially when I bought the book, I though I would read it and pass along, but it is so good, I'm planning on keeping it in my permanent collection and giving other copies as gifts (it was that good).Brahm, an abbot, became a Buddhist monk early in life, after growing up in England and getting a physic's degree from Cambridge. The way he writes, I suspect is the way he speaks and it is such a kind and comfortable tone; making you want to have him as a friend or someone you could pour your heart out too.The stories/lessons that particularly touched me were about laughing when you get angry or upset, anticipation makes fear/pain, creating happiness through laughter and taking oneself so seriously, and stop wasting our lives worrying about things, problems that have no solution? The book is super easy to read, I recommend everyone read it at least once!
Wisdom for the ages. I really enjoyed reading the life experiences and just downright good stuff from Ajahn Brahm. I am a Christian, but found extremely great advice for anyone whether Christian, Buddhist and everyone in between. The humor and humanity is great. A must have for all kinds of life situations.
Ajahn Brahm has really changed my life with his many wise teachings of Buddhism.
I have grown wary of paperback books because many are printed on cheap paper, apparently by a worn out old printing press. It makes them a strain on the eyes. This delightful book by Ajahn Brahm contains enlightening stories from his lectures. Some are repeats of ones in other books, but they are all worth reading over and over until it sinks in. Its nice to have for that bedtime read to settle the nerves and close the eyes with peaceful thoughts.
Am reading it for the second time...full of wise Buddhist oriented anecdotes with a great deal of humor included. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for personal growth.
This is a well written inspiring book; don't need to be a Buddhist to appreciate the humorous stories. A quick read, perfect for someone who needs a laugh or inspiration.
This book was recommended by a Doctor, the stories are inspiring, humerous and send messages thru the story--telling the reader if you want change/ work for it! I recommend it to anyone, but specifically for those who are having a hard time with life in general. If you want to see and grow a beautiful flower-- then don't put a rock on top of the seed preventing the growth...
A wonderful collection of stories that share wisdom and insight with each reading. I actually bought this 2nd copy to give as a wedding gift because the stories help us get along with one another. Ajahn Brahm is a Western (from England) Buddhist monk hugely popular in Australia and SE Asia. He trained in Thailand for 8 years and started a monastery in western Australia. He is an excellent story teller. Quite direct, often funny, He has genuine wisdom to share. You do not need to be Buddhist or know anything at all about Buddhism to appreciate these stories. They are for everyone, everywhere.
