Tonight's the second night I've stayed up past midnight reading, and now that I've finished it, all I can say is: Wow.Peasprout is the kind of story that can only be written by an author who deeply understands the complexities and lived-in nuances of growing up Asian. This is why representation matters. I really wish we had books like this growing up; I would loved to be that young reader coming across this book, seeing myself in so many of the awesome characters in this story. In one imaginative fell swoop, Henry weaves a world full of symbolism, mystery, and beauty in a truly original story that any kid starting at a new school could relate to. A real gem of a novel, and really-- one of the most charming stories I've read in a long time. I'm already looking forward to the sequel!

I can't say enough wonderful things about this book. To start, so original! I remember how thrilling it was the first time I saw Baryshnikov demonstrate that ballet wasn't just this delicate, flowery thing but something that could be powerful and incredibly masculine. I felt the same thrill and delight when I read this book and learned that ice skating could be beautiful and graceful and…LETHAL. Wow! Then there's the dreamy-cool world of Pearl itself. I won't spoil anything, but it's unlike anything I've known before. It makes me wish there really was a place like Pearl that I could go visit. I also loved the complicated but sweet relationship between big sister and little brother. I am not ashamed to say I may have cried a little bit. And finally, so funny! Ten thousand years of stomach gas, I could not stop laughing out loud in so many spots. This is such a fresh, fun book that you must read, whether you're an adult or sharing it with kids. Though if you do read it with kids, be sure to start with "Do not try this at home."

As a new mother to two girls, I'm always interested in finding books that contain positive female role models. That's why I was delighted to find this book, featuring an ambitious, spry young girl with big dreams and a huge heart. The concept of this book is so unique and I've never come across another like it. When I started reading the book, I was intrigued and couldn't help but want to go further and further into the pages to find out what happens to all the characters. It's been a really enjoyable read. Thank you, Henry, for bringing such a masterpiece into the world. From nothing, you created something; a beautiful and incredible and intricate something. What a treasure for adults and kids to come!

This is like your favorite training/underdog/sports movie plus the most luscious art history/language immersion course. I laughed; I cried; I re-read. No joke. There is a depth of feeling that goes beyond YA fantasy, I'm changed by the depth of community, betrayal and commitment to excellence in the story---and by this amazing author. I want you to have your own experience with it, so I've tried to craft this review many times. READ IT. NOW.

Harry Potter meets Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? Yes, and it has all the wonders of those stories. Peasprout Chen is a delight to follow through her adventures, as she learns to navigate in a world new to her where her talents alone may not be enough to carry her (and her little brother Cricket) through. This book is fun but also complex, and readers of all ages will enjoy it. This is the kind of book that is so rich and entertaining you want to share it: more people need to discover these characters and this world and the challenges they face. Highly, highly recommended.

This is a boarding school story, like Harry Potter or Malory Towers, but the school's unlike anything you've seen. This is a place devoted to teaching wu liu, a martial art form of ice skating. The entire school is make out of skateable Pearl, so each of the six exams involve the outsides of buildings as much as the courtyards. And because the protagonist won't settle for anything less than being first in her class (she's decided to be the future legend of skate and sword, after all), she's a memorably driven character, a big fish transplanted to a bigger pond who's still determined to prove she's the biggest.The story is lean and graceful, much like wu liu itself. And the pace is frenetic. I wouldn't be surprised to hear readers devouring this book in a single sitting.

This book had me with martial arts figure skating, but it ended up being so much richer and more complex than that. The worldbuilding is phenomenal, and the city of Pearl is like no other fantasy world I've ever read. I love Peasprout's confidence and unashamed pride in her talents. Very rarely do we get to see girl characters who are awesome and who own it. But that doesn't mean that Peasprout sails through every challenge she faces. She still has to grow and change in interesting ways that make her an even more enjoyable character. I highly recommend this for adults and children both.

Guest editor Louise Penny claims she can't write short stories but she certainly did an outstanding job of culling 19 great reads for this collection. It's hard to pick a favorite but the ending of "Smoked" brought tears to my eyes. "Gun Work" is an old-fashioned detective tale set in the West and " PX Christmas" let's us travel to Korea. Both are entirely satisfying. Despite the many dark themes there is a surprising amount of humor scattered among these gems. There are 20 stories all together but I crossed ""Phantomwise 1972" by Joyce Carol Oates off my list. It's mystery to me how every year this author seems to worm her way into the series. Her stories are wordy and pretentious. I'll forgive Penny for this slip-up because her other picks are so enjoyable.

I enjoy mysteries and I enjoy short stories, so this volume attracted me on a couple fronts. I also appreciate someone (in this case, Louise Penny and Otto Penzler, series editor) taking the time to cull the literature and decide which short mysteries are worth inclusion in their fine volume.Generally, I enjoyed all of these stories, some more than others. I’d have to say T.C. Boyle and Joyce Carol Oates are big hitters with whom I’m familiar. Frankly, I liked Joyce’s story more than T.C.’s, however the writing and pacing in both was superb. In fact, for me, the final five stories were all pretty good. Some of the others – e.g., Death in the Serengetti – were interesting and well-constructed, but I didn’t find the language first rate.The only reason I'm giving this four stars is because anthologies are tough to rate higher, given the unevenness of the pieces.

A classic, if you love mysteries, short stories and are willing to work with diversity of presentation then this is a late fall classic every year.This year is chocked full of great stories, one or two fall flat but still easy to read.Enjoy!

Good short stories. My wife took my book and has not put it down. She’s really enjoying it. I enjoyed a few stories and will read the rest when she’s done. If you like short stories it’s a pretty good collection. Not classics but generally good writing.

Loved this book so much, mostly because I just returned from an amazing life-altering trip to Jordan just two weeks ago. We visited many of the places he mentions in the book. I'm from New York, I've studied Arabic both Fuhsa and the dialect of the Levant and thankfully, I've been to Syria, Lebanon and Egypt. I plan to visit as many Middle Eastern countries as I possibly can. Although the book is dated (2002) I completely felt the vibe that the author was giving us as he described his adventures in Amman, his struggle to master a very difficult language and getting to know the culture. I learned a lot from reading this book about the identities of the Jordanians, Palestinians, refugees and the sentiment of America in the Arab East. It was a pleasure to read this book and I only pray that things in this beautiful region of the world get better.

Sincere, honest, and funny are words that come most readily to mind when summing up this book. Young American Ben Orbach showed significant courage in traveling to the Arab World (and Turkey) post-9/11, and he was on the ground with war in Iraq brewing and then breaking out. He is a true traveler in the classical sense, going afar to seek wisdom and change, not to impose or justify prejudices or preconceived notions. He is clear about his convictions, but humbly does his utmost to understand the many different opinions he encounters along the way. His insights, informed by his knowledge of the local language, are passed on to us through the e-mails that he wrote home from the Middle East--those missives are the substance of the book. His distinction between "America haters" and "American policy critics" will help Americans who are struggling to grasp the nuance of Arab/Muslim politics and society. In this and some other sections of the book, Orbach outlines what he believes are some of the implications for U.S. Middle East policy.The author's personality comes through with a great sense of humor. His account of using the facilities in high-class hotels is hilarious--something any young and cash-strapped traveler who has searched desperately for clean restrooms in developing nations can surely relate to. The Jordan snowball fight is awesome.This wil be a sort of guide book for Americans studying in the Arab/Muslim world. It can also be a Middle East primer for any Americans who are seeking to be more-informed citizens.Perhaps the most important question to ask of any text is, "what of it?" At first glance, pursuing peace might seem a somewhat grandiose ambition to link with this book, but I believe that is the author's primary motivation. His search is in the spirit of U.S. Middle East envoy Dennis Ross, who dedicated his book "To the Children of the Middle East." The Middle East is controversial, and readers will surely find cause to disagree with Orbach at points along the way. Mr. Orback's affection for the people he encountered is obvious. He describes the grim realities of their situation in the Middle East realistically and objectively. His experience is one that a woman could only read about. He describes quite well the differences in the strata of society and the ways that women have to conduct themselves within the culture. I am glad that Mr. Orbach had courage to have made this journey during such a tumultuous time in East/West relations (and lived to tell the tale). I thank him for his book.

Y life in the different regions of the Middle East! I knew there are different dialects of Arabic, but not that it is determined by your fathers' lineage, and where he's from.

Wow, really liking this travelogue book. It's a collection of letters he sends home during his long stay in the Middle East. It's honest, authentic and I feel I am able to connect with the country(s) and the people in a way that not all travel books are successful at.

This outlines the experiences of a graduate student moving to Jordan and living there for 7 months just prior to the American invasion of Iraq. His experiences and interactions with local people are facinating and highly insightful. His travels around the middle east are equally insightful. It is easy to see the Arab people as a homogenous group when in reality there are huge tribal differences between the peoples of the area.It places a human face and personna on the various peoples in the region.

A fantastic book. The parallels with Tom Friedmans' "Beirut to Jerusalem" are remarkable, but where Tom's insight derived from serving as the NY Times correspondent to Beirut and Jerusalem and interacting with high level politicos (top down), Ben's piece involves living in Amman where he had to endure a brief, cold shower every other day due to water constraints (bottoms up).This work palpably demonstrates how miserably US foreign policy aggravates Middle East problems, but reinforces the hope that if we take the time to know our neighbors, peaceful reconciliation is possible.

This is an amazing book. It is told through letters and a that student's perspective. What makes it so amazing is that while he is a student of Arabic he is also a Jew. He develops relationships with various Arabs throughout the book. It gives hope that friendship and understanding can come even in the most diverse gatherings. It also gives us, the average reader, the opportunity to visit countries most of us will never see due to political strife and civil unrest.

In 2010, Shawn Michaels retired from the WWE after a successful run of over twenty years in the ring. A native of San Antonio, TX, Shawn officially became a part of the WWF (now the WWE) in 1988. I originally picked up this book because Ben is a huge WWE fan and always enjoyed Shawn Michaels. It's something that Ben and I have always enjoyed watching together so I knew there was a very good chance that I would enjoy this book as well. Turns out that I was right. The book isn't as preachy as I was originally concerned that it would be. Yes, Shawn mentions his faith, God and Jesus on nearly every page but it's done respectfully and not in a way that you feel as if it's being crammed down your throat. Having read this book, I'm very interested in finding a copy of the first book that Shawn helped to pen about his life. As for this book, it's a fine edition to both the wrestling and autobiography genres and both Ben and I are hoping to read more about the entertainers that we enjoy on tv every week.

I have been a wrestling fan since I was 8 years old. Now 35 with a family of my own, I read this book because it was written by Shawn Michaels. I can say I was presently surprised by how inspired I am. I have lived a life of sin and this book makes me want to be a better man, husband and father. I finished the book in less than 4 hours. Not once does Shawn preach forcefully or make anyone believe that his way is the right way. He shares his witness and his relationship with God, in hopes that it will touch at least one person's life. I can say it touch mined and starting today, I hope I can be half the changed man that Shawn has become. I hope my faith and relationship with God will carry me through the rest of my life. I know it will not be easy but with God's help I will make it.

When I was 9 years old, my first exposure to wrestling was watching the 1995 Royal Rumble where Shawn Michaels won the Rumble match even though he was the Number 1 entrant. Ever since, Shawn Michaels has been my favorite wrestler.I found this book to provide good insight into a man who hit a low-point in his life, and the ways he came around to overcoming the obstacles to his happiness. The only complaint I would have about the book was that it was quite short, and there were many parts where he just glossed over some topics without going into more detail about them.Regardless, this book isn't primarily one about wrestling. It's more about a story of how one's priorities in life change, and just one example of how one comes to their own happiness.I would like to comment on an earlier review where a person said that liberal Non-Believers should not read this book. I am an agnostic who leans heavily towards atheism, and yet, I still found great value in reading this book. Just because I don't share the Christian faith, that does not mean I cannot appreciate a story of the journey a man went through to go from being a drug-addicted, deeply unhappy person who just lived for themselves to a sober, happy man who lives primarily for his family and faith. Everyone has their own journey to happiness, and we as humans should celebrate our diversity. Even if you are not Christian, one can appreciate and value the ideas expressed by Shawn Michaels: the importance of family, the importance of not having one's happiness be exclusively determined by what one does for a living and the ability for people to dramatically change their lives around. These are not ideas exclusive to Christianity, but are shared by people of all beliefs. And although Shawn Michaels talks about these things through the lens of Christianity, that does not make them irrelevant to non-Christians.

I picked this book up because 1) I'm a long time WWE and Shawn Michaels fan, and 2) I'm a 30+ year old born again Christian who was looking for inspiration for my Baptism testimony later this summer. It's very clear that Shawn has matured very well as a Christian, and has a very deep understanding of the Gospel, and gives very down to earth, relatable situations of how he has applied it in his own life and wrestling career. His testimony of how he came to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior is great (look for it on youtube as well).The Venn Diagram intersection of wrestling fans and Christians is fairly small, but the stories were very entertaining to my wife, who knows nothing about wrestling at all. Thanks Shawn for your inspiration.

Possibly the most controversial wrestler of all time, Shawn Michaels had a change of heart a few years into his first retirement that would turn his life around.Instead of sensationalizing what happened before or since, Shawn gives a measured look at what he has done wrong and what he's done right, indicating a man of character and maturity who wants to help others. He freely admits to his mistakes without going into salacious detail and gives simple advice using well worn scriptures.I found the simplicity of this book quite comforting and appealing. In the cacophny of life we often are search for short cuts and new ways of looking at things that will revolutionize everything without real work or change. Although never pretending to be perfect, Shawn tells how real change is a daily choice of repentance, faith, and making the simple choices God wants you to make.Shawn's memoir gives details of his wrestling life and homelife, but he keeps the focus on where it belongs: the God who saved him and to whom he gives all the glory.Well done, Showstopper, well done.

I had read his previous book and enjoyed it. When I read the breakdown of what this book would be, I was immediately interested. How would one of the greatest wrestlers ever show he had made changes in his life to his wwe family? How would they react? How would he handle his new life as he went back to wwe?I found myself inspired this time around. I realized he's no different than any other Christians. I discovered someone who goes through life trying to please God; A man trying to do his best in life and be the best example he can be to everyone with one of the best attitudes ever.Really impressed with this book. Really impressed with Shawn Michaels. Read this book.
