8 On Monday, March 25, Lee came walking up Neely Street carrying a long package wrapped in brown paper. Peering through a tiny crack in the curtains, I could see the words REGISTERED and INSURED stamped on it in big red letters. For the first time I thought he seemed furtive and nervous, actually looking around at his exterior surroundings instead of at the spooky furniture deep in his head. I knew what was in the package: a 6.5mm Carcano rifle—also known as a Mannlicher-Carcano—complete with scope, purchased from Klein’s Sporting Goods in Chicago. Five minutes after he climbed the outside stairs to the second floor, the gun Lee would use to change history was in a closet above my head. Marina took the famous pictures of him holding it just outside my living room window six days later, but I didn’t see it. That was a Sunday, and I was in Jodie. As the tenth grew closer, those weekends with Sadie had become the most important, the dearest, things in my life. 9 I came awake with a jerk, hearing someone mutter “Still not too late” under his breath. I realized it was me and shut up. Sadie murmured some thick protest and turned over in bed. The familiar squeak of the springs locked me in place and time: the Candlewood Bungalows, April 5, 1963. I fumbled my watch from the nightstand and peered at the luminous numbers. It was quarter past two in the morning, which meant it was actually the sixth of April. Still not too late. Not too late for what? To back off, to let well enough alone? Or bad enough, come to that? The idea of backing off was attractive, God knew. If I went ahead and things went wrong, this could be my last night with Sadie. Ever. Even if you do have to kill him, you don’t have to do it right away. True enough. Oswald was going to relocate to New Orleans for awhile after the attempt on the general’s life—another shitty apartment, one I’d already visited—but not for two weeks. That would give me plenty of time to stop his clock. But I sensed it would be a mistake to wait very long. I might find reasons to keep on waiting. The best one was beside me in this bed: long, lovely, and smoothly naked. Maybe she was just another trap laid by the obdurate past, but that didn’t matter, because I loved her. And I could envision a scenario—all too clearly—where I’d have to run after killing Oswald. Run where? Back to Maine, of course. Hoping I could stay ahead of the cops just long enough to get to the rabbit-hole and escape into a future where Sadie Dunhill would be . . . well . . . about eighty years old. If she were alive at all. Given her cigarette habit, that would be like rolling six the hard way. I got up and went to the window. Only a few of the bungalows were occupied on this early-spring weekend. There was a mud- or manure-splattered pickup truck with a trailer full of what looked like farm implements behind it. An Indian motorcycle with a sidecar. A couple of station wagons. And a two-tone Plymouth Fury. The moon was sliding in and out of thin clouds and it wasn’t possible to make out the color of the car’s lower half by that stuttery light, but I was pretty sure I knew what it was, anyway. I pulled on my pants, undershirt, and shoes. Then I slipped out of the cabin and walked across the courtyard. The chilly air bit at my bed-warm skin, but I barely felt it. Yes, the car was a Fury, and yes, it was white over red, but this one wasn’t from Maine or Arkansas; the plate was Oklahoma, and the decal in the rear window read GO, SOONERS. I peeked in and saw a scatter of textbooks. Some student, maybe headed south to visit his folks on spring break. Or a couple of horny teachers taking advantage of the Candlewood’s liberal guest policy. Just another not-quite-on-key chime as the past harmonized with itself. I touched the trunk, as I had back in Lisbon Falls, then returned to the bungalow. Sadie had pushed the sheet down to her waist, and when I came in, the draft of cool air woke her up. She sat, holding the sheet over her breasts, then let it drop when she saw it was me. “Can’t sleep, honey?” “I had a bad dream and went out for some air.” “What was it?” I unbuttoned my jeans, kicked off my loafers. “Can’t remember.” “Try. My mother always used to say if you tell your dreams, they won’t come true.” I got into bed with her wearing nothing but my undershirt. “My mother used to say if you kiss your honey, they won’t come true.” “Did she actually say that?” “No.” “Well,” she said thoughtfully, “it sounds possible. Let’s try it.” We tried it. One thing led to another. 10 Afterward, she lit a cigarette. I lay watching the smoke drift up and turn blue in the occasional moonlight coming through the half-drawn curtains. I’d never leave the curtains that way at Neely Street, I thought. At Neely Street, in my other life, I’m always alone but still careful to close them all the way. Except when I’m peeking, that is. Lurking. Just then I didn’t like myself very much. “George?” I sighed. “That’s not my name.” “I know.” I looked at her. She inhaled deeply, enjoying her cigarette guiltlessly, as people do in the Land of Ago. “I don’t have any inside information, if that’s what you’re thinking. But it stands to reason. The rest of your past is made up, after all. And I’m glad. I don’t like George all that much. It’s kind of . . . what’s that word you use sometimes? . . . kind of dorky.” “How does Jake suit you?” “As in Jacob?” “Yes.” “I like it.” She turned to me. “In the Bible, Jacob wrestled an angel. And you’re wrestling, too. Aren’t you?” “I suppose I am, but not with an angel.” Although Lee Oswald didn’t make much of a devil, either. I liked George de Mohren--schildt better for the devil role. In the Bible, Satan’s a tempter who makes the offer and then stands aside. I hoped de Mohrenschildt was like that. Sadie snubbed her cigarette. Her voice was calm, but her eyes were dark. “Are you going to be hurt?” “I don’t know.” “Are you going away? Because if you have to go away, I’m not sure I can stand it. I would have died before I said it when I was there, but Reno was a nightmare. Losing you for good . . .” She shook her head slowly. “No, I’m not sure I could stand that.” “I want to marry you,” I said. “My God,” she said softly. “Just when I’m ready to say it’ll never happen, Jake-alias-George says right now.” “Not right now, but if the next week goes the way I hope it does . . . will you?” “Of course. But I do have to ask one teensy question.” “Am I single? Legally single? Is that what you want to know?” She nodded. “I am,” I said. She let out a comic sigh and grinned like a kid. Then she sobered. “Can I help you? Let me help you.” The thought turned me cold, and she must have seen it. Her lower lip crept into her mouth. She bit down on it with her teeth. “That bad, then,” she said musingly. “Let’s put it this way: I’m currently close to a big machine full of sharp teeth, and it’s running full speed. I won’t allow you next to me while I’m monkeying with it.” “When is it?” she asked. “Your . . . I don’t know . . . your date with destiny?” “Still to be determined.” I had a feeling that I’d said too much already, but since I’d come this far, I decided to go a little farther. “Something’s going to happen this Wednesday night. I enjoyed this book thoroughly, and took my time reading it. I could "hear" Mr. King's "voice" in my head as I read this on my iPad Kindle app. I felt like I was reading something from a friend---as if he had written a personal letter to me--- to give me an understanding of what he went through to become the person he is today. I think that his directives about the "how-to's" and "don't do's" were very practical. I breathed a sigh of relief when I got the feeling that writing classes and clubs are kind of a waste of time. Just write, is what I think he was telling me, I mean, his audience. I will probably read it again. What I got from his personal, real-life-lessons is this: Read a lot. Read good stuff. Write all the time. Find a place and write. Don't share your stuff unless you share it with someone you can trust. Go with your gut. Write all the time (I said that already because he said it or inferred it frequently). Don't use the same adjective over and over. Stick to the point. Don't over-do it on the descriptions. Let your audience see the movie you see in your head, because if you write it well, they will. I am glad this wasn't a "point by point HOW TO WRITE a story or a book" book, because really, writing isn't something you can do easily from a bulleted list. Writing is something you do from your heart, and you keep doing it until it's right and good. And then when that person you trust reads your stuff and offers some criticism, you can take it for what it's worth and use it or not.

I purchased this book because the description stated that it contained all 4 books including Rage. What a disappointment to receive the book and open it to find that it includes only 3 of the 4 books... no Rage! If you are looking to complete your stephen king collection, avoid this copy! Incredibly frustrated buyer!

The main reason I bought this book was that the description said that it included the story "Rage". I was dying to read that, and the other three stories would be a bonus. Well, what a major disappointment to receive the book and find that "Rage" is not included. There are three stories, not four, and I will be returning this book due to false advertising. Very, very disappointed.

Some books I rate with 5 stars just because of my pleasure in the story. These aren't always well-written or creative, or something someone else would like. Then there are those books that are so well-crafted, not just with character development or storytelling but in the writing itself. This is one of those books. I've always given Stephen King credit as the "king of the flashback" and here he gives us some of what he does best, but he also shows again his ability to get inside the head of the character in the present. From making up lyrics to songs sung by a fictional boy band and the brand names of fictional ice cream treats, to details of a Midwestern city that make those of us living in Midwestern cities think ours is the one in the story. I wondered in the beginning of the book if King was making a game in paying homage to himself with hints he dropped to reference some of his previous best sellers, but he played this game for just a short while. There are plenty of other pop-culture references in the minds of the various characters that do well to establish their ages and backgrounds.As the story unwinds after the climactic events, my emotions surprised me. I've cried while reading books before, but not while reading the words of a bureaucratic proclamation!

I have been an on-again, off-again reader of Stephen King’s over the last decade or so (I was more loyal prior to that time) as sometimes I like his stuff and sometimes I don’t. The last one I read was the awful "Under the Dome," which was long, pointless and ultimately just silly, and I wasn’t thinking of reading anything else by him until I read a couple of reviews by Charles de Lint in a recent Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. I trust Mr. de Lint’s tastes, so when he praised "Mr. Mercedes" and its follow-up, I figured I’d give them a try. Mr. Mercedes is the nickname given to a man who stole a car (guess what make) and plowed into a group of job seekers standing outside a building waiting for a job fair, killing 8 and wounding many others. Recently retired cop Bill Hodges has been drifting since his retirement, regretting that he didn’t catch certain bad guys, including Mr. Mercedes, but when he receives a letter purporting to be from the villain, instead of succumbing to depression as the writer intended, he begins to investigate. And, of course, the investigation just becomes more and more dangerous as he continues to delve into the mystery…. The reader knows who the culprit is from early on in the book, so the appeal is following the cat-and-mouse hunt as the suspense builds. King is as good as he ever was with respect to his characters and plotting, and he’s always great with the gross-out scenes (which here are not too many, thankfully). This turns out to be the first book in a trilogy, and I’ve already picked up the second, "Finder’s Keepers," with the third due out in mid-2016. Fast-paced popcorn reading, "Mr. Mercedes" just hits the spot; recommended!

This is a compact intro into caving. I learned something new with every paragraph, and that is what I like in a book. Every chapter provides no-nonsense instructional material and thus a time-efficient way to learn. Only the preface/intro is a bit unfocused. It's a practical book with clear and compelling explanations, about 200 pages strong and amply illustrated.Various technological advances have found their way into the 2009 edition, such as LED headlamps, digital cave photography, and even videography.Among my favorite tidbits are the wisdom of eating a substantial breakfast on the day of the caving trip, long crawls where you cannot turn around, the physical concept of the fall factor for a rope, the warning that an on-camera flash will reflect on otherwise unnoticed fog, and the use of photo stacking for cave photography. That said, the book is far more systematic than this random list of items may suggest.As others have pointed out, the book is centered on Great Britain. Where location matters, the rest of the world receives at most half of the attention. Life in caves is divided into Britain and 'overseas'. 'Where to cave' dedicates 12 pages to the UK and 2 pages to North America, where most native speakers of English live.In conclusion, I really like this book, because it's tremendously useful and up to date---also beautifully illustrated.

The Complete Caving Manual left me feeling unsatisfied. I am a novice caver who has only been twice. I don't know enough to know what questions I should be asking, so while I felt that the information provided was good, I didn't feel like it made me a whole lot more confident than I was before. There is a lot of information about cave life, safety, conservation, and things like that that were interesting. Most of the examples talked about caving in Britain, so if you aren't in the UK, you will have to relate in a more general way. I will keep this book. It may become more useful to me as my knowledge grows, but in the meantime I am looking for something else as well.

I have had personal experience with Mr. Sparrow and find him to be a very competent caving instructor. His book, which I wish I had autographed, is very insightful. Mr. Sparrow has taken me caving several times and have felt completely safe and at ease as a novice. Highly recommend this book and his caving services.From the start of this book it gives you the very basics you need to know about caves and caving. Don't go caving without at least having this book on hand. What a guide.

Who doesn’t like Wild Kratts*? My son has been a fan for a long time and this book fits the bill, as it is both interesting to him and educational. It is a science reader, and because it is Wild Kratts it combines fiction (the power suits) with non-fiction (animal facts).This is a level 2 reader, but it is an advanced level 2 reader. It is an advanced level 2 due to content and length. For example, younger early readers would do better with one of the Paw Patrol level 2 readers first – which has much simpler language. This reader is longer and has more advanced words like “structures”, “rattlesnake”, “poisonous”, “savannah”, “warthogs” and so on. It is also 32 pages of text. It is a challenge for an child that can read some of the simpler readers alone already. This book is best either for an older new reader, or a fan of Wild Kratts. And of course, it can be a read-aloud. It is full of interesting facts for the parents too.They do a good job with the pictures. The cartoons included are exactly like those in the show and there are plenty of illustrations. Excellent to help the children see the animals, make observations and be able to understand the text more fully.In my opinion, this is an excellent book and a great addition to any kid library.*Just in case you do not know who the Will Kratts are here is a little background. This is a show that can be found on PBS about two brothers who investigate animal powers and use the powers to create power suits. They believe wild animals should live free and in the wild. It has excellent content.

My daughter loves Wild Kratts and loves reading these books. They are educational and an easy read. They aren’t put together very well as the seam does begin to separate rather quickly. But it’s an inexpensive book and I’m sure I can fix it with glue.

Both the rattlesnake and the crocodile have four pages of text devoted to each particular reptile. The draco and basilisk lizards and gila monster each receive two pages of text. Next, the rock python and gecko are presented; finally, there is a broad overview of the topics turtles and alligators, The print is large and easy to see; there is not so much text that it overwhelms a child reading the book. The illustrations look much like the animation from the “Wild Kratts” television show.“Wild Kratts Wild Reptiles: Snakes Crocodiles, Lizards, and Turtles!” is an excellent book with which to encourage young readers. My grandson has been willing to try reading this book aloud. It features some of his favorite PBS characters; it is short, but not too short; and, Martin and Chris “Activate Creature Power”! However, this is not a book meant to provide detailed zoological information and more complete overviews of these reptiles, their habits, and habitats. For the purpose of encouraging reading in those children who are Wild Kratt fans and reluctant to read, “Wild Kratts Wild Reptiles: Snakes Crocodiles, Lizards, and Turtles!” is an outstanding choice.

This is a very nice, brief excursion into orthodox preterism. It is written from the perspective of a person who was confronted with the contradictory messages of dispensational futurism. It presents the "at hand," "near," and "coming soon" promises of the Scripture as historical reality while avoiding the embarrassing excuses of futurism (i.e., "this generation" means thousands of years away). I appreciated his tone and his gentle handling of the text. I would have appreciated this while in college instead of stumbling headlong into the issue like I did. And I appreciate Godawa's use of the term "orthodox" when talking about this position.There are plenty of books which will take you deeper into the study. Another introductory book is The Last Days according to Jesus. An outstanding book dealing with the dating of the book of Revelation is Before Jerusalem Fell: Dating the Book of Revelation. One of the first books I read on this subject was Last Days Madness: Obsession of the Modern Church.I would recommend the title by Brian Godawa to those who may be new to the idea that futuristic may be more hype than scholarship. If you believe that the Bible should be read on its own instead of through the lens of newspapers, then this is for you. If you're tired of mass hysteria every time a pastor predicts the end of the world, then this is for you.

I read this powerful book straight through, in one single sitting. No kidding. It was that compelling -- that much of a page-turner! In "End Times Bible Prophecy: It's Not What They Told You," Brian Godawa offers his insightful, well-researched, and even revelatory take on what is the rightful, most accurate interpretation and understanding of some of the most well-known "end-times prophecies" in the Bible. I highly recommend this book -- both to those who are new to the study of the book of Revelation and eschatology in general (it summarizes the basics very efficiently and understandably), and to those who are more familiar and well-versed in these subjects."End Times" is a rather quick study and presentation -- how I would've loved for the author to go even further and deeper -- but it nevertheless presents compelling, appetite-whetting evidence that what most dispensationalists and futurists have traditionally believed and subsequently proffered to the masses (whether through well-meaning biblical commentary, or popular fiction that "left behind" much of the actual truth of the scriptures, or sensationalized prophecies in the media that ultimately failed) are gross misinterpretations that have misled believers for centuries. I won't go into the details here, because that's what Mr. Godawa wrote the book for, but suffice it to say that his arguments blew my mind...and that ain't easy to do. A MUST-READ!

Brian Godawa provides the research behind his view of the end times (eschatology) driving his new fictional series, Chronicles of the Apocalypse, which begins with Tyrant: Rise of the Beast (Chronicles of the Apocalypse Book 1). End Times Bible Prophecy offers a high level overview of the partial preterism position. Mr. Godawa lays out the historical evidence for a fulfillment of Jesus' Olivet Discourse presented in Matthew 24 and links in other prophesies from Daniel, Revelation, and other, related passages. For those interested in pursuing the available material further, he includes a bibliography.I was impressed with this little book. I drifted away from my previous views on end times several years ago, apparently on a similar trajectory as Mr. Godawa. I appreciated his inclusion of his own prior views, his reasons for questioning those views, and his journey to understanding and taking up his new position. A lot of these personal reflections resonated with me and helped give more concrete terms to positions I've taken up myself.You may not expect to learn a lot of new details in an overview, but one really stood out: the use of "antichrist" in the New Testament. I was surprised to learn that only John uses it, only in his epistles, and never in his Revelation. That was certainly not the only surprise, but it was the most striking for me given the number of end times prophecy commentaries that use that term.Regardless of your position, I think this is a well written book worth your consideration.

Brian tells his story of how his end times views have changed. His questions were ones that many of us have. Doesn't soon mean soon? What about all those time sensitive verses mentioning things like "this generation or some of you will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom." I know I had those concerns. I also know that the answers I was getting were not satisfying. If took really looking into the Word to see that most of what I was taught was wrong. This is a great book for someone who is searching for the truth and wrestling with the inconsistencies they have been taught. Brain explains and defends his view logically, historically and more important Biblically.Every theory has some holes but this view has the least huge jumps and bizarre interpretations. Even if it doesn't change your mind it will give you a clearer understanding of the position.

This is not a "true" story but it gives some insight into maybe how the story of Jacob's wives started and ended. It was an awesome book, one that I have read at least five times. You need to go into the book though and realize that it is fiction and just one way of looking at the story. This book actually went around our bible study group and everyone enjoyed it, as a great fiction book based off of scripture.

First a critique of the review process. I hate that Amazon insists that I choose one of their descriptive words to "describe the plot of this book." They gave me the choices of "predictable," "some twists," or "full of surprises," none of which are an apt summary of The Red Tent.Many thoughtful reviews have already been posted. I will affirm that it was wonderful to read this story, told from the point of view of the women. In those times, women were treated as chattel and the only power they had was that of producing sons. They claimed that power, and it was fascinating. I also liked the portrayal of the community of women and what they brought to the family economy, I hope that part is "true."I love the historical fiction quality of the book. The alternative perspectives from Biblical literalism is a relief. The alternate perspective on Dinah's "rape" is worthy of contemplation. In today's world, there are "honor killings" that sometimes occur when women have sex outside of marriage, whether it's consensual or rape. We have a modern context for seeing women who don't have self determination, whose marriages are arranged, or consent still only comes with a price. It's not that hard to see the possibility of an alternate reality for Dinah. It certainly makes for a great story. I am fascinated by the tensions and textures created by the encounters with people of differing beliefs, the women practicing the old ways, those who don't, the paganism, those following the God of Abraham, and then the Egyptians. It is interesting to follow how those beliefs color their lives and how they interact with people of differing beliefs. One can also experience that in the reviews here on Amazon!I do not find the story anti-male or anti-Bible. When one recalls that men had all the power, then tragic use of power is on the men. But other aspects of power appear in the encounters between the shepherd and the king, and Dinah amongst the Egyptians, etc. The tensions of religion and culture and social position within the tribe and beyond are part of the story.I've tried to write without spoilers. It's a great book. One can be a person of faith without being insulted by a single syllable in this book. Criticisms from 2000 are interesting, but I think that time is on the side of deep appreciation for The Red Tent.

Being Russian Orthodox (where, at least in our little corner of the world, Bible reading is for the priests and not only not encouraged, but is not a thing at all for the laypeople), I can hardly comment on the differences between this retelling and the original text. What I can say is that this book is an insight, however fictional, into the lives of women at a time when they were but footnotes in the history of men, if mentioned at all. I would recommend The Red Tent to anyone who wants more than read a footnote, or anyone, who, like me, had trouble even starting reading the Bible, specifically for the reason that the stories told are missing half the people. Ignore the controversy and just read it. This book is worth judging for yourself. To me, it was worth reading just for a glimpse of time, even if only imagined, when at least someone didn't see being a woman (childbirth, menstruation, etc.) as being cursed by uncleanliness. There are countless women and girls even today, all over the world, whose futures are maimed and ruined just for this reason. There are people out there who are working hard to change this attitude, and a book like this, a new perspective, can help more than an argument.

This is not a good book for someone who is trying to learn the story of Jacob. I read half and had to stop. At one point in the story, it talks about Jacob telling the story of Abram. However, the author writes that Sarai was a priestess, and that a goddess came upon her and made her with child. This is not at all what the Bible teaches. There are many things in the Bible that you can let your mind wonder about like how the conversation went between Jonathan and David when Saul tries to kill David and how the people of Egypt were probably screaming and crying when God was sending plagues. However, the Bible is very clear on what happened to Abram and Sarai, and it had absolutely nothing to do with a goddess. Also, the Bible clearly states that Dinah was raped not in love. I would just suggest that you be careful when reading this and understand that the Bible does not agree with many of the things written in this book!

This is the second d time I've read this book. Know, I don't reread books. I have recommended this book since the first time I read it, back in my 20's, but now that I'm older, I felt it deserved a second review. I fell in love all over again, but for different reasons. The first time I was in awe that's actually liked it. I loved the celebration ration of a strong female character and heroine. Now, I still love it for the same reasons but in a different way. I love her quiet strength. Her resolve. Her confidence. Her self-awareness. It was a book anew to me. And a celebration of womanhood all over in a more mature way. Still in love and would recommend all over again!!!

I normally love historical novels. I found The Red Tent very informative with regard to the life-styles, and traditions of the time.I did find it a bit long-winded in places and switched to speed-reading whereas I normally like to "savor" the literature that I read.I still enjoyed the book and have recommended it to my book club

Overall, I enjoyed Alchemy of Air and the examination of the Haber-Bosch process and its impact on the world. The book raised a lot of interesting questions on the utility and consequences of fixing nitrogen from the air. Though, the premise of the book is a bit melodramatic. The author claims that over 2 billion people are alive as a result of the Haber-Bosch process, but that seems pretty speculative.This is my favorite quote from the book from Bosch:"I have often asked myself whether it would have been better if we had not succeeded. The war perhaps would have ended sooner with less misery and on better terms. Gentlemen, these questions are all useless. Progress in science and technology cannot be stopped. They are in many ways akin to art. One can persuade the one to halt as little as the others. They drive the people who are born for them to activity."This is Bosch's opinion, and it highlights the double-edged nature that this book does of good job of explaining. In fact, the book seems to touch mostly on the negative aspects of the pursuit of better fertilizer and the Haber-Bosch process. Much of the book covers wars, including wars in South America over Guano and salt in Chile, WWI, and WWII. It touches on the slave-like work conditions in Peru and Germany. And in the end, the book notes that the end result is pollution and obesity.One aspect of the book that threw me off in certain parts was when the author described the challenges with developing the Haber-Bosch process, related to finding a catalyst and dispersing hydrogen. The book would seem to spend a couple paragraphs describing the issues and then suddenly the next sentence would state that Bosch somehow found a solution with explaining the process. It seemed to make the book over dramatic in parts.Overall, I liked the book.

Thomas Hager’s book, The Alchemy of Air, is an extraordinary book that is both fascinating and instructive . It focuses largely on Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch. Both became Nobel Laureates. Haber was the utterly brilliant chemist who created the process that made it possible to create synthetic nitrogen fertilizer out of air when supplies of natural fertilizer from Peru and Chile were beginning to diminish, thereby threatening the world with catastrophic famines. In addition to fertilizers, synthetic ammonia products were also the basis of explosives. Haber’s discovery provided Germany with both the food and the explosives that enabled Germany to stay in WW I for four years; Without it Germany would have had to surrender after about two years. It is estimated that up to half of the world's population is alive because of Haber's devvelopment of synthetic fertlizer.Haber also invented the poison gas that was first launched at the Allies at the Second Battle of Ypres on April 22, 1915. The Allied forces were unprepared for the attack in which 10,000 are said to have perished. Haber developed the gas and also the method of delivery. He calculated when the wind would blow the gas away from the German lines and toward the Allied lines. Haber also developed Zyklon A, out of which Zyklon B, the gas used by the Germans in WWII to exterminate the Jews. Both Bosch and Haber were important scientists at BASF before I. G. Farben, the great German conglomerate, was created. Bosch was able to design and have constructed the huge factory that made the mass production of ammontia economically feasible. Without his practical implementation, the Haber discovery would have been economically useless. BASF’s original factory site was at Ludwigshafen. During the early part of WW I, the French were able to bomb Ludwigshafen even with their primitive planes. Bosch created a new site, Leuna, which was far less accessible to French bombers. In WW II, another Farben product. Leunabenzin, synthetric gasoline, enabled Germany to stay in the war in spite of the diminution of supplies of natural petroleum products. During WW II allied, mostly American, bombers bombed Leuna as the key to taking Germany out of the war.When I. G. Farben was originally formed in 1925, Bosch became its head, In the late 1930s Farben was the world's largest chemical corporation and the world's fourth largest corporation., In addition to BASF, Farben's component corpoations included Hoest, Bayer, Agfa, Fritz Haber (1868-1934) was born Jewish in what was then Breslau and is now Wroclaw in Poland. He converted to Lutheranism. Both of his wives were born Jewish but converted as a condition of marriage. About twenty per cent of BASF-Farben’s scientists, before Hitler, were Jewish as were a number of members of the governing board. Bosch was not a Nazi. He tried unsuccessfully to retain the Jewish scientists. He was more helpful in finding work for them outside of Germany. Farben was speedily Nazified. Bosch ended up an emotional wreck who drank too much after attempting to appease the Nazis while attempting to get his Jewish scientists out of Germany.Both Haber and Bosch were utter geniuses. I did not realize the crucial importance of Farben before reading this book.I knew it was important. In reality it was crucial to Germany's war effort in both wars. One of Farben's corporations during WW II was I.G. Auschwitz which produced buna, synthetic rubber, using Jewish slave labor which were worked to death and then replaced by other slave laborers who were similarly worked to death. After the war, the Allies put an end to Farben although its component parts have flourished. Haber was regarded as a Jew by the Nazis although he had been a passionate German nationalist.It can be argued that Haber was the most important scientist of the first half of the twentieth century because of his creation of synthetic fertilizer, It can be argued that he was one of the most destructive because of his contributions to German weaponry. In 1933, he left Germany for Cambridge where Lord Rutherford, Britain's leading physicist, refused to shake his hand,According to Hager, the huge jump in the world’s population since 1900 was due to the work of Haber and Bosch. Without it, there would have been at least 40% fewer people in the world. Thus, Haber was one of the most important scientists of the twentieth century. Without his discoveries and Bosch’s productive implementation, there would have been catastrophic Malthusian famines. But, Haber who enabled so many to live was also the inventor of the poison gas that killed many. He created zyklon a; zyklon b was used by the Nazis in their death camps. In spite of his desire to serve Germany, the Nazis wanted him out and disgraced. He was a Jew.Religious conversion meant nothing to the Nazis.

This was a very good read - 4.5 stars. Author Thomas Hager is engaging, clear, and he held my interest. The subjects - renowned German chemists (and Nobel laureates) Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch developed what could be argued as the most important chemical process in human history - Nitrogen Fixation via the Haber-Bosch process. Nitrogen fixation - creating ammonia essentially from air (nitrogen and hydrogen) allowed for the production of both fertilizer and high explosives. World-wide fertilizer distribution in turn created the green revolution and has allowed the world's population to explode from less than 2 to over 6 billion (and growing), with the average person going from a marginal existence to an "over-eater". It has also contributed to nitrogen pollution of world-wide waters, ecological destruction, and climate change. High explosives greatly helped create the horrors of both World Wars and countless smaller conflicts, killing many, many millions. It is close to impossible to overstate the importance of this discovery.As the author details, Haber and Bosch were fascinating, driven, and complicated men. They lived in a time of great upheaval. And they came to understand much of the bad, as well as great significance of their work. My one concern about the book is the range of subjects touched upon and consequent short discussion of a lot of it. Author Thomas Hager had enough important topics and material to write perhaps half a dozen good books. More detail could have been used on the chemistry involved, the moral dilemmas, the Jewish-Nazi interaction (Haber was Jewish), Bosch's synfuel development, and other topics. Despite this minor qualm, I recommend this book as one from which a lot will be learned.
