As a high school teacher, I'm always looking for something inspirational to give my helper kids when they graduate. At the same time, I don't want to slam them with a 300-page book that they will likely never read. I actually found this book to be excellent for high school grads and college grads, alike. Garnered from his previous biographical texts and slimmed down for a quick, easy read, MJF's inspirational ruminations encourage a positive outlook on life, in spite of unexpected setbacks. This book (by implication only) may spark people to read his more lengthy texts. If you have them already, expect repetition. Regardless, it's great.
This is a wonderful and very practical book, giving advice to high school graduates. Having a grandson who was about to graduate, I scanned the book quickly, and decided it was a gift that he needed to receive. Michael J. Fox is not only a gifted screen star, but he's an excellent writer! I wish every high school graduate could read this book.
You can surely spare an hour or so to read this short but sweet book. I was expecting a longer book (received this via my Kindle so I had no idea how short the book was) but wasn't disappointed. It is a great book for those just venturing out or for those of us "seasoned" individuals who will read certain parts of the book and think; "Yeah, life is kind of like that". I think what I liked most about the book is that I found it to be relatable. Michael J. Fox has a simple way of putting his life lessons and thoughts out there in such a way where you can relate or imagine what's happening. All in all; I liked it and I recommend it.
This is a great book for high school and/or college graduates. Two particular things in the book -- you learn math when you have to pay rent and buy food at the same time. The second was Michael never wrote down "contract Parkinson's at 30 years of age.Everyone needs a "Play B"
This is the extended edition of "Oh The Places You'll Go." Michael J. Fox begins by pointing out how odd it is that he has several honorary doctorates, considering he is a high school drop out. The rest of the book is set up as a series of college courses he "completed" in the school of life. He is grateful for the help he had along the way, and admits that, while he learned many important lessons, it may have been less painful to learn them in the classroom. This is a quick and inspirational read that highlights the many educational experiences humans have, in and outside of the classroom.
Such a good book by one of my favorite people (: I learned a lot from this book, being that I'm an oncoming colllege student, I could totally relate and needed the advice (: I've been told I should read it again after I graduate and that's exactly what I plan on doing (:
In todays' world there's a help book for just about everything you can imagine, and Fox kindly reminds us that life simply does not come with an instruction manual or a map; we simply just have to take it as it comes and take your best shot with whatever information you have at the moment. There is something to be said about the school of hard knocks i.e. life experience. Whereas the author does not diss formal education entirely, I do. A so-called degree in the USA in many ways is over rated considering after graduation you will be already financially in the hole just for college costs. Besides you don't need a degree to work at Starbucks and that's where everything is heading anyway. There is something quite honest about A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Future I suspect partially because Michael J Fox seems to be one of those rare exceptions; he seems to be a decent man amid the sea of Hollywood cretins. We enjoyed watching him on TV and the movies, and we admire him now in real life as he struggles for a cause.
Michael J. Fox has been my biggest hero since I was a little kid and Back to the Future blew my heart and mind. I've continued to follow him throughout my life and have read his other two books so I figured I had better get this one too. It's certainly doesn't promise and is not intended to provide the same kind of depth, emotional or otherwise, as his other books. But it delivers on what it promises. It's a cheap, quick, and easy little read that delivers some sage advice along with Fox's classically humorous anecdotes. While it was intended to be a booked aimed at graduating students, it certainly also works on a general enough life level so as to hold value for the non-graduate as well. If you're a fan of Fox, I would recommend going ahead and getting this book. It's not going to cost you much at all, it provides you that always nice reward of actually finishing a book in a reasonable timeframe, and most importantly, it's expectedly warm-hearted and will at some point put a smile on your face or perhaps even a tear in your eye.
