If you had to purchase just one book on photo restoration this is the one. If you own one of the earlier editions this is an incremental improvement. Another reviewer was disappointed and if you owned one of the earlier editions this will not be all new content for you. It is worth buying and I own all of the three prior editions. The authors provide you the practice files and the steps necessary to begin restoring and retouching photos. If you work through the book you will become a capable restoration artist and have all of the tools necessary for photo restoration. If you purchase this with Ctein's book and Wolper's book you will have all of the photo restoration library you need. Each book is very good but these to me are the three best on the subject of photo restoration. If you are interested in photo retouching there are other books that focus solely on that subject but the treatment of it in the 4th edition is good. I have waited for the 4th edition and understand why some owning the earlier editions might hope for an entirely new book but frankly not a lot has changed with the software and techniques of photo restoration. I was hoping that the book would devote a little more pages to especially thorny photo restoration issues and problems.
Having and having enjoyed Ms Eismann's earlier books, I placed an order for this book over a year ago. Upon receiving this book, I started at page 1 expecting to learn and enjoy again. Shocked, I went page after page and found zero new ideas/techniques (albeit with some new images), and worse, found zip useful. Less book topic relevant info than earlier books by a good measure.Admittedly, I have now read other Photoshop books, but this also allows me to say that dozens of other Photoshop books better cover topics attempted in this book, by a long measure.The central problem is that this book's goal seems to be to cover much of of Photoshop's massive waterfront of capabilities, and ends up sadly and very superficially covering any topic or user problem usefully. Far better would have been to focus exclusively on Restoration and maybe retouching (the before/after of retouching show little improvement) in some depth.Ms. Eismann is very talented and experienced, but this is a wasted effort. I think she teaches so maybe this book is an expanded course outline for her students. If so, each chapter is at best a pointer for the student to focus elsewhere to learn the chapter's topic.As I said, I purchased being very excited, and am now very disappointed and returning the book. Of the many hundreds of books I have purchased at Amazon, I have never returned a book.
This is an excellent book. Well written and comprehensive. In this, the 4h Edition, Katrin Eiesmann and her associate writers have brought the earlier editions up to 2018; software, supplies, and techniques. If you are into photo restoration and retouching it is great. Besides the writer’s excellent knowledge and skill set, there are tips and tricks salted through the text from additional expert associates. One Caveat, you must be “Photoshop†savvy in order to effectively use the material in this text. The authors make it clear in the intro that this document is not intended as a primer. I owned the first two editions and was absolutely amazed at the techniques and processes. Back around the 2001-2003 period when the first two editions came out, they were a breath of fresh air for me. I was transitioning from the "wet darkroom" to the "digital." Katrin's text really convinced me that it was the way to go.
This book on Abobe Photoshop techniques is by far the best and most useful resource that I have bought in years.

This is the book to read if you have some knowledge of Photoshop and want to improve yourexperience. I highly recommend this book.
If you are into improving your photos with Photoshop or want to restore some old photos that have suffered the ravages of time, then this is your book (or should I say bible). First of all, the authors alone should attract you to this book. Katrin Eismann has published several books on this subject already, is an internationally known and respected photographer, teacher and has been inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame. Wayne Palmer has a lifelong passion for photography including field, darkroom and classroom experience. Dennis Dunbar has worked as the Photoshop guru on many movie posters and commercial images. He has also conducted workshops around the world sharing professional insights on retouching and compositing. As you can see, this represents a stellar bank of knowledge about restoration and retouching. If they haven’t done it, then it doesn’t exist.The book starts off looking at the user’s workplace and workflow. Since restoration and retouching can be a time-consuming process, the authors look at the retouching environment and lighting and provide some information on physical setup. Computer considerations are covered next providing some recommendation on computer speed, RAM, hard drive space, monitor, pressure sensitive tablets, backup systems and printers, etc. As you can see, they consider all the items that might affect the user’s restoration and retouching efforts.Next, input to the restoration process is considered. Part of that consideration includes such things as the condition of the photo to be restored. Can it be scanned or photo-graphed, is it dry, wet, rodent infested, does it have fungus, etc.? A number of suggestions to overcome problems such as these, are presented.Having successfully input the photos to be restored into the computer, a considerable amount of space is now devoted to handling the photos in Photoshop or Lightroom. I should mention that this book includes the ability to access and download photos that need retouching or restoration. Thus, the reader will not be left high and dry due to the lack of suitable photos that need restoration on which to practice. Also, there is a section of the book that shows the reader what can be done in the restoration area using Photoshop Elements. There is a considerable amount of information in this book on the use of Photoshop and Elements which, alone, is worth much more than the price of the book. These experts leave nothing undone.As stated at the beginning of this review, if you are at all interested in restoration, retouching, or simply doing a better job on processing your photos, this is the book for you. Considering the experience of the three authors and their collective ability to teach the subject, you could not be in better hands.
