I have studied Viking history for years. This is a very detailed study of Viking warfare. The author follows virtually all of the major (and many not major) Vikings from early in Scandinavian history in great detail delving into life histories and some side notes on legends. Maps and illustrations are very good, including some I have not run across before. The Kindle edition allows you to expand the illustrations and more importantly the maps for studying. I read this on an 8 inch screen tablet using the Kindle app. My rating is four stars as the book lacks an index which is necessary in a book of this size and complexity.

An inside look at how the Vikings terrorized Europe in their day and ,boy, did they get around. Did not like the maps and charts as they were too small and faint to decipher. Makes clear the old poem "and from the fury of the Northmen, Oh Lord, deliver us".

Great photographs, well made book. Unfortunately, all that we’d like to know, we can’t. The Vikings were too busy doing and did little recording. Most of what we know came from the recordings of other countries.

The book followed along as it progressed through history about how the Vikings waged war and also peace. Not only in Europe and the near east but also in the Americas.

Excellent history book. Many illustrations. Easy to read.

Great information well-presented.

First of all, I am biased: I believe that The Iliad is both the pinnacle and the foundation for all Western literature, and one of life's great joys for me was learning to read the immortal words of Homer in ancient Greek when I was a teenager. So imagine the thrill of seeing those immortal words translated into a graphic format! This is a complex tale, told in complex language, with an impossibly wide cast of characters in a culture that seems far away from our modern world, and yet it all comes alive on the pages of this graphic novel, just as relevant to our current events now as it was almost 3000 years ago. I am the parent of two students with learning challenges, and I am using this book to make the classics accessible to them. There is nothing simple or easy about the Iliad. The author streamlines the story somewhat, and uses different types of visual cues and reader guides to facilitate reading comprehension. At the same time, the author uses many of Homer's narrative tricks to bring specific moments to life. This book does contain plenty of violence, human trafficking and references to rape (it's about a war), so parents should exercise their judgement about appropriateness for children or young teens. It's approximately a 7th grade reading level. But it's ideal for getting young adventure-lovers hooked on heavy-hitting literature - definitely not for the Charlotte's Web crowd. As soon as the book arrived on my doorstep, I went straight to the scene of Priam clasping the knees of Achilles, and it was exactly as I'd hoped, exactly as Homer describes it. That scene answers some of life's big questions: How do you forgive the unforgivable? What does it mean to be human? What does anything mean? The author's artwork includes some archaeological touches from the time period of the Trojan War, very nice to see. The overall effect is stunning, and captures the spirit of Homer's epic poem. I didn't think the author could possibly top his editions of Beowulf, King Lear or The Odyssey, but here it is: the cornerstone of Western literature. Highly recommended for adults, teens and tweens who are curious about this ancient tale.

Wow. There is a lot going on in this book. Like a super lot. For me, someone who is not well-versed in the Iliad or Greek mythology, this was just too dense.Reading this felt a bit like trying to watch all 8 seasons of Game of Thrones condensed into one season. The result is a massive info dump of character names and relationships and that doesn't leave a ton of room for engaging story. I chose to read this because I thought it would be an easier way to familiarize myself with the stories. I think the opposite is true.This material will be much more enjoyed by those who already have some understanding of the story. My 10-year-old nephew who has been absorbing these stories since he was about 6 would LOVE this. He already knows the background information, so reading this would not nearly be the same struggle for him. I think this is well-suited for that kind of reader.The art here is good, and I appreciate the efforts Hinds made to try to differentiate between the characters. I also quite like the notes throughout that explain certain words or ideas.Overall, I give this 3 stars, but think that people familiar with the story will like this much more than I did.Thank you to NetGalley and Candlewick Press for providing me with a DRC of this book.

I have long been a fan of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. I own three separate translations of these classics - Samuel Butler's prose, and Stanley Lombardo's and Stephen Mitchell's verse translations. I particularly like Mitchell's. Lombardo's, however, has a special appeal in its covers which link the world of Homer with our world. The Iliad cover is the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach from the stern of a Higgins Boat landing craft. The Odyssey cover is Earth, rising over the bleak landscape of our Moon which captures the longing of Odysseus for his home and family in Ithaca.Just recently, I expanded my collection with Gareth Hinds' graphic novel adaptations of both books. Hinds has added a new visual dimension to both with his realistic artwork on every page.It is interesting that Hinds published the Odyssey first, in 2010 and the Iliad just this year. Where his Odyssey tells some of the story entirely through the illustrations, the Iliad uses words on practically every page. In my view, this is more effective than the illustrations alone, in nearly every case. That said, the graphic novel formula works extremely well in both books. This is due to Hinds' research into the history and archeology of Ancient Greece as well as his use of multiple translations and critiques of those translations. His Iliad is enhanced by a fairly extensive set of notes keyed pages where he explains what he did and why.To his great credit, Hinds asks his readers to actually read one or more of the many good translations of Homer. He recognizes that what he has given us is an adaptation, not the original work. He has, I think, remained true to the originals and through his artwork expanded our understanding of Western Culture.

This graphic novel retelling of Homer's Iliad was not quite what I expected. It's much too word-heavy for a graphic novel, and I found myself bogged down in the text. Most of the panels have so much text that there is barely room for the artwork. And the artwork itself is nothing special. I didn't care for the cartoony look, and it just didn't grab my attention. It looks somewhat amateur, or hastily drawn.If you are a big fan of the Iliad, you might like this, but I did not enjoy reading it. Usually I love classical literature, and I have read The Iliad before, so I was happy to be revisiting the story of the Trojan War with all the drama. But this book does not deliver drama. It is among the best of the how-to books, earning space on the shelf next to UNDERSTANDING COMICS and the DC COMICS GUIDES to creating great comics.There are loads of sketches from his work on GREEN LANTERN, WATCHMEN, MARTHA WASHINGTON, THE ORIGINALS and more.The design tends to dedicate the double-page spreads to one topic or aspect of the process. Script writing, Logo design, lettering, coloring, character design and visual storytelling are all covered. Dave Gibbons also shows respect to the trail-blazers of the medium as he cites his influences.Highly recommended.

I got this book for my son for Christmas. I looked it over when it came and it's a real nice book. Nice and big, with lots of sketches/illustrations. My son was absolutely thrilled with it.

Good insight into comic books.

As a professional cartoonist and teacher of drawing comics, I've read countless books on the subject, and HOW COMICS WORK is among the best; an excellent and valuable addition to my library. Clearly and attractively laid out (SO important in how-to books), and packed with sharp insights from a seasoned master of the medium, this book guides you sensibly through the process of creating comic books: from script-writing to visual storytelling to lettering, coloring, and overall book design.Gibbons's advice is cogent and to the point, describing smart methods that will help sharpen your game and save you time and trouble. Also included are several "influences" pages, showcasing the work of great creators Gibbons has learned from over the years. And, of course, there are abundant examples throughout of his own beautiful work -- both finished and in-process -- to helpfully illustrate his points.Dense but highly readable, this is a book I'll return to and peruse often -- and so should you!

I was given a chance to review this book by the publisher and I have to say this is the best book I have ever read on the process of creating comics.Dave Gibbons give us his perspective on writing, drawing, lettering, color and every aspect that goes into creating a comic. As a long time fan (over 50 years), a former retailer of comics and a collector of original art I have always had a fascination with the actual process. Most comic books are a collaborative process and that means the process changes from almost comic to comic. The Marvel comics from the Silver Age were often created via the marvel way - which often meant the artist took an idea from a writer and created 20 pages of story and art. Now 50 plus years later trying to figure out who created what is a nightmare for the lawyers. Other times the artist are drawing from a full script. EC Comics were often nightmares for the artist as they had to try and fit in a lot of story in often crammed panels. Today most companies employ a full script and the writer lays out page by page and panel by panel. This allows often little freedom for the artist if they are working on a book with a tight schedule as different pages may be done by different artists. I'm digressing from what this book is about - but it shows my love for understanding the process. Dave gives us a wonderful breakdown of each part of the process and how he approaches comics. It provides insight into not only his process but how come parts of the rest of the process works for many comics. It is replete with tons of artwork and examples making it a visual feast as well as a book that illuminates.Simply put this book is worth the bang for the buck if you enjoy trying to understand how comic books work. Wonderfully put together and an enjoyable read.

No doubt, David Gibbons is a gifted comics genius, but Ted Williams, the greatest hitter in baseball and last player to bat over.400 never made a solid coach. It did not work for me.
