As an avid but critical reader of the memoir genre, "Hiding Out" is at once a revelation and a roller coaster, a page-turner in the best sense of the phrase. There are jaw drooping moments to be sure but the writer, Tina Alexis, never exploits her past to subject the reader to cheap sensationalism. Instead, her story renders the reader in awe of her spirit, as fire-charged as it is.Her memories evoke a not-so-distant past when families hid their closet skeletons in ways not as common today, in part due to a conservative Catholic (with serious connections to the Vatican) upbringing that while familiar to this reader, may seem downright exotic to others. I found the recalled dialogue masterful, never forced, and that which draws out the characters in ways you feel you know these people. And what characters! Wow.I am dying for a sequel. What was Tina Alexis' next chapter? We know (by the book jacket) that she moved to New York and became an actress. I want to know more and soon.In sum, brilliant and full of brio.A must read for anyone who is delivered by a story of transcension.
Intoxicating, raw and honest. This book is truly amazing. What a life. I didn't want it to end, found myself slowing down as the final pages approached. I wanted to savor every word of Tina Alexis Allen's writing. Heartbreaking. Inspiring. A roller coaster of a ride. A truly unique story, and a voice I've never before encountered. A must-read for anyone who loves a well-written, heartfelt... not just memoir... but story.
I loved it! Such an honest telling of one's story, and how she learned how to deal with some of the most unexpected secrets that nobody would suspect to have to deal with. And then, how to deal with how she deals with it! I am not much of a reader, but this was such an interesting and exciting read, that I read the entire book in 2 days! I don't know if I would ever have been able to keep her secrets for as long as she did. I hope to get the chance to be able to someday sit with Tina one day over dinner and learn even more!!
I love memoirs-it's always interesting to me when a person can clearly remember events from their childhood. (because I definitely can) A mark of a really good book or talk to me is if that book or talk inspires you to want to learn more-her observations of her father's involvement with the Catholic church and the Knights and mention of the Freemasons makes me want to dig in to learn more about how those groups formed and have evolved. Thank you for sharing your pain and growth.
An honest, all flaws exposed, searing memoir.....of a life of lies and deception. Tina Alexis Allen displays courage, and finally forgiveness and compassion, reflecting on an outrageous and incredibly difficult childhood. Cheers to Tina, and to her beautiful prose and unflinching honesty. A must read for all....a 10 out of 10.
With blunt, raw honesty, Tina Alexis Allen mines the harrowing territory of her childhood as the youngest of 13 children in this memoir about sexual abuse, family secrets, and one young woman's quest for freedom and redemption. Allen's exploration and dissection of her relationship with her larger-than-life father, who is at turns charming and narcissistic, lays bare the painful repercussions of learning how to live a life based on deceptions and lies. She was constantly being betrayed, seduced, and abused by the adults she turned to for support and comfort. Wrestling with her budding queer identity in a strict Catholic family, she turned to booze, drugs, and sex as a means of coping, while "hiding out" with her father in his own web of deceit. Tender, moving memories with her abundantly loving mother commingle with a undercurrent of longing for the messy, sloppy love of her oversized, chaotic household. "Hiding Out" is a thrilling read -- we are enrolled in Allen's plight, her mistakes, her desperate attempts to individuate from her family, and her deep, deep desire to live her life openly and with love. A fantastic debut from a powerful, truth-telling woman.
From the moment you start reading Hiding Out, Tina draws you into her life, one of 13 kids raised with a staunch Catholic upbringing. It's the secrets that Tina keeps, the intrigue and mystery surrounding her dad, and what secrets kept and exposed can do to a family that has you turning the page. You're with Tina throughout her journey as she weaves her story, struggling to gain footing and to understand herself, what has happened to her, to her relationship with both her mother and father and her quest for lightness, understanding and her authentic self. She truly takes you for a ride in a well-written, thoughtful and truthful memoir that has you laughing, crying and rooting for the human spirit.
Tina Alexis Allen’s, Hiding Out, is a raw, brutally honest, tale of family betrayal, love, redemption, and secret lives lived. Add Vatican intrigue into the to the mix, and you’ve got a book that’s impossible to put down. Did I mention, it’s a memoir, and the shocking story is true?Tina, the youngest of thirteen siblings learned to lie at an early age to hide her dark secrets. The story turns on its head when she realizes her father, a devout Catholic, who sired thirteen children, and had intimate ties to the Holy Roman See, was also living a double life.Tina’s taut writing style keeps the narrative moving at breakneck speed. She shares her startling history as she lived her life, no-holds-barred.
