I enjoyed every page of THE CHAMP: My Year with Muhammad Ali and highly recommend it to anyone interested in this dynamic, super athlete. Michael Gaffney is an outstanding photojournalist. He gives an unbiased, insider's view of his year with an Ali, who is nearing the end of his career. The photos are poignant; the commentary insightful. Although I followed those great matches, I was unaware of the behind-the-scenes account so well presented in the book - the victories, struggle, defeats, and determination of this great fighter. Like the author, I was a young teen who listened to the Clay-Liston fight on the radio. THE CHAMP is an inspiring tribute to this extraordinary person and a reminder that we need heroes like Muhammad Ali in our world today. This book is a must read for all Ali lovers.
Of all the iconic athletes in the world none has carried a stronger message than Ali - courage, tolerance and peace - he has shown us in his life what it takes to stand up for what you believe in - Michael Gaffney has captured the essence of the man and his message in his beautiful book of stories and photographs in a way no one else could unless they traveled and lived with The Champ on the road and at home for one amazing year. Excellent and insightful photo journal from an insiders propective of the end of Ali's e great boxing career. Highly recommended for any sports or boxing fan who appreciates an inside look.
Thia was a great story, and the pictures were great! I have watched Mohamed Ali's and adnired his skill as a heavy weight boxer over the years.

The author only provided superficial insights into Ali. I was hoping that after having spent a year with Ali there would be material that I was not already familiar with.
Not a lot of photos, just a retelling of what I already knew much better Muhammad Ali books out there.
For anyone interested in a behind the scenes view of Muhammad Ali, The Champ is must reading. The vignettes that photographer/author Michael Gaffney offers up are as captivating as the marvelous photos that fill his wonderful book. While The Champ has its share of action photos of fights that occurred during Gaffney's year with Ali, it is the glorious pictures out of the ring that reveal the interesting, and often sensitive story of The Greatest. Whether it is with his children, contemplating an upcoming fight in a hotel room, or simply running on the beach, The Champ promises to bring back wonderful memories of arguably one of the greatest athletes and most fascinating figures in sports history. Author Gaffney has done boxing fans a great service by sharing his formidable collection.
