Rob returns, continuing to battle the difficulty of dispensing technical information with his trademark humor and candor, to bring vintage car enthusiasts and home wrenches yet another amazingly useful book. He's proven time and time again his knack for breaking down difficult to digest processes and information, and delivering them in a way that the layman can not only understand, but actually enjoy. I counted myself extremely lucky that Rob released this book just as I was beginning to restore and install the Air Conditioning system in my vintage BMW, as I'd counted on knowledge gained from his books and writings on multiple previous occasions, and this time was no different. He thoroughly breaks down the entire system, how it works, how it can be repaired, restored, and retrofitted. This should join the rest of Rob's work to complete any gearhead's toolset! If you're looking to repair, retrofit, or restore your vintage car's AC, or even if you're just curious about how it works, you NEED this book!
for the home builder. After reading this book (twice through) I purchased some of the tools listed. I was then able to restore the AC in two of my collector cars. I know that I am not an expert now, but I have the confidence to try some of these repairs on my own. It paid for itself with the first car.
The author provides a great overview of the functions of the various components in automotive A/C systems, followed by more in-depth descriptions of what can go wrong with vintage systems, particularly those that sit unrepaired for a long time. After absorbing the knowledge in this well-written book, average shade-tree mechanics [once equipped with the right tools and supplies, also detailed], should be able to revive even long-dead systems to full functionality.
I'm getting ready to install AC in my old BMW 2002 so the timing of Rob's book was perfect. The book is full of great technical information but unlike most books of the type, it's a fun read as well! I always used to read Rob's "Hack Mechanic" column in Roundel before anything else in the magazine and this book reminds me why.
As always with Rob’s work, this is a good read, and a valuable resource for a DIY mechanic to learn auto A/C systems. Would never have attempted A/C before, but I’m confident I can take on the restoration of my Bavaria’s tired system.
This book is a must-have for the avid DIY auto mechanic. Rob Siegel takes a step by step approach to systems, tools, diagnosis. Great resource, and informative. Also a fun read!
