This book does much more than teach you how to get backed...I've worked in the private sector, federal government, and for non-profits, and this book is extremely useful to learn how to communicate and push big ideas in the most tangible way in each of those contexts. Since getting this book, I routinely find myself referring to it to guide me through my fundraising pitches for my non-profit and to help me define and communicate our core strengths amongst a crowded field of similar organizations. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their communication skills, sell better, tell better stories, design better graphics, improve branding, and influence others through their ideas. Even though this book should be a required addition to the syllabi of every business school, international affairs school, and journalism/mass communication school, students who use it to design their own presentations will stand out among the crowd. Great job on creating a simple, practical, and relevant guide to fundraising and beyond.

I'm an entrepreneurship educator who supports student entrepreneurs, and this text is the most thorough treatment of how to reduce a credible plan of action into a compelling pitch I've come across in 10+ years. While it provides the traditional pitch deck architecture you'd expect, it also contains valuable sections addressing: (1) the pitch deck slides you should have at the ready for the discussion you'll ave with potential investors, board recruits, and so on; (2) approaches to creating a narrative arc (origin stories, dramatic tension, etc.), and (3) typography, slide layout, and color theory that build design skills. Highly recommend this book. Note, too, that while Chapter 2 is a free download, it's abridged and omits the "extra slides" an entrepreneur will want handy.

With so many books like this having been written previously, my expectations were somewhat low that one could be written that would provide unique insights and a fresh perspective. I was wrong. First having bought the Kindle version, I consumed the raw content, but appreciated the book even more for its colorful charts when my sister gave me the hard copy. Evan Baehr and Evan Loomis have artfully developed a piece that should be used by any entrepreneur and even their advisers. Let's face it. Business plans are boring in the traditional 50+ page format. PowerPoint is now used to liven-up decks for pitches but most professionals lack the ability to develop the pictures that are "worth a thousand words". And, most decks either leave out the critical elements or drown audiences in far too many extraneous slides. This book offers structure, discipline and techniques. Not the only reference I would suggest - Guy Kawasaki, Brad Feld, Vinod Khosla, Sequoia Capital, and my professor, the late Jeffry Timmons have all written books and decks that one should use. But definitely you should add this to those esteemed VCs' guidance.

Get Backed has the dual advantage of distilling principles for successful fund-raising and also giving you an inside glimpse into the pitch decks of notable companies who have recently raised successful rounds. I can't think of a better way to get your creative juices flowing than to see the tools and techniques that other entrepreneurs have successfully used and to consider how they can be adapted to your startup as well. The book covers the deck, the pitch, the relationship generation and the eventual closing of the commitments.Of particular value is the insight gained from the presentation of a number of recent pitch decks to investors, how they were received and the behind the scenes commentary from the creators themselves.

The key is how to build strong relationships with investors, of course, but also family, friends, vendors, and employees...which is crucial for leading a happy and fulfilling life, as well as for building a successful business. And....the book is full of wonderful success stories, which make it fun to read. Highly recommended for everybody, not just entrepreneurs!

One of the great debates in American foreign policy is how do you deal with repressive regimes. There are several schools of thought on how to proceed. The first is isolation (this has been the U.S. policy towards Iran and N. Korea). The second is confrontation (Iraq is the obvious example) and the third is communication (this would be the tactic used by Nixon in China and the policy of détente with the Soviet Union). Each policy has its advocates and detractors and each its plusses and minuses. Embracing China has worked out fairly well for its citizenry although there is much room for improvement. On the other hand supporting the Saudi monarchy has caused some serious headaches for the U.S. and Saudi citizens. Isolation and sanctions have a very poor track record and generally makes repressed citizenry even worse off. Confrontation can have unpredictable results that often exasperate the situation. Military confrontation can lead to considerable misery and verbal confrontation generally fails because one of the maxims of maintaining a dictatorship is demonstrating strength. The Bush administrations threats towards Iran and North Korea have fallen flat.The ethos of `do no harm' fails when deciding how to deal with stable but brutal dictatorships or failing regimes. I was watching Hotel Rwanda with my girlfriend when she asked why the United Nations hadn't done more to protect the Tutsis from genocide. But what could the U.N. do? Slaughter the Hutus? The Tutsis had blood on their own hands. In the case of Bosnia the U.N. and U.S. bombed the hell out of the Serbians but again the Albanians were no angels and had in fact sided with the Axis during WWII. While trying to arrest Somali warlord Mohammed Farrah Aidid 18 American soldiers died but so did an estimated 1,000 and 1,500 Somali militiamen with an upwards of 4,000 injured Somali. So when does a humanitarian mission become a slaughter?In the case of the Soviet Union the people were clearly suffering under a crushingly repressive dictatorship. Despite its claim to being a system of the working man, Communism was an intellectual farce and an economic disaster. It was also a system bent on spreading its message and extending its influence. So the debate in the West was between confrontation and isolation. In the end a compromise of sorts was formed ending in confrontation through proxies. The author gave several examples of countries playing the two superpowers off one another. By not explicitly siding with one or the other smaller countries could manipulate for their own benefit or "wag the dog".`The Cold War' by John Lewis Gaddis is rather brief for a subject spanning over 40 years of history. The author spends a considerable amount of time discussing the changing nature of war after the invention of the atomic bomb. We all owe a debt of gratitude to leaders on both sides of the iron curtain for showing the wisdom and restraint to not use these horrifying weapons. `The Cold War' chronicles the history of the Soviet Union from Stalin to Yeltzin. In the Soviet Union there was no position high enough that one could be free from danger of removal. There will always be a debate on whether containment was the best solution or whether it was Reagan's confrontation that was the final nail in the coffin. The author clearly favors the style Reagan and Thatcher and pretty much omits the sections on U.S. meddling in South America and the Middle East in the name of containment. Reagan's refusal to use the nonworking SDI as a bargaining chip seems silly in retrospect but it was on his watch that the Soviet Union collapsed and since the world wasn't irradiated I figure he must have done SOMETHING right.

The Cold War was unique in that it was a truly global conflict, even more so than WW2 and definitely WW1. It touched upon and radically transformed European nation-states, turning them from Imperial/colonial superpowers into welfare-states, aspiring for greater unity and transformation. It completely overturned South America by making it a battlefield of ideologies as has happened most notoriously in Nicaragua, Chile, and Cuba. The struggle over the dominance of the latter one almost led to another world war, this time with nuclear and hydrogen bombs. This conflict has given Africa facelift. At the beginning of the XX century, the continent was dominated by France, UK, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, and Germany while at the second half of it, new, independent states sprang up from the ruins of those colonial empires. These states faced incredible challenges and many of them descended into anarchy, others managed to play off the superpowers against each other and attempt to establish modern, prosperous states. Asia, for the first time since the medieval times, became once more the centerpiece of global history: China turned communist, India, Indochina, Gulf- states, all of them achieved liberty and the hegemony of the West and Japan was broken. During the Cold War the world became increasingly tri-polar: Beijing, Washington and Moscow called all the shots. Nevertheless, it was still a battlefield, a place for proxy wars and impressive yet terrifying attempts to mold people themselves, like the Cultural Revolution in China or the Islamic Revolution in Iran.John Lewis Gaddis is a well known and a renowned Cold War historian yet this work is sometimes a bit lacking and at times hard to follow. If you are looking for an in-depth study of the conflict that lasted for five decades and encompassed the globe this is not it. This is simply an overview of the most important events and personalities that shaped the course of the War, which sometimes got hot as in Korea, Vietnam and Afghanistan. The main issue I take with this book is not that it is too long or too short or that it brushes over certain historical occurrences in just a couple of paragraphs but its choice of how to approach the topic. All of those aforementioned issues are not really issues because as a historian you have the prerogative to prioritize how much importance you want to put on things/events/personalities as your research has indicated that those events perhaps were not that important. However, some issues, like the Vietnam War or Cuban Missile Crisis are oddly absent and the roots of those conflicts are left for the reader to research. Nevertheless, the main drawback is how different themes of the conflict are approached. Even though they generally follow a chronological and a geographical pattern, it is still difficult to discern what is happening and get the whole picture. The Cold War was a global conflict and the fact, that very abstract themes like "Hope" are chosen makes the topics harder to grasp.However, when it comes to positives, this book has many. Firstly, a very interesting and in fact, funny, style of writing make the book much more enjoyable to read. Sometimes it reads like a good novel with metaphors and good biographies of the leaders. Additionally, the author covers all the major themes even if sometimes there are things you would like to know more about. The chapter about the non-aligned countries is particularly interesting to read for the new and unheard material is brought up, which we largely do not associate with this conflict. Fors instance, how smaller countries like Nationalist China (Taiwan), South Korea and even South Vietnam all had at one point or another threatened the US, that their governments might collapse if the US does not send aid. A similar role for the USSR played China, especially in the Taiwan crises of 1954 and 1958. Another interesting example is between China and France. Both of these states were thorns in the sides of their respective greater allies. France unnerved the US with its going alone stance and China continuously attacked the USSR and claimed it was not a truly socialist country. Finally, the number of details, citations, and variety of argument presented in most chapters allowed for a great visualization of this epic struggle between nations, states, ideallogies and ultimatelly, people.

One would expect a better summary of the major events of the Cold War from John Lewis Gaddis. But most get short shrift. A glaring example is the Cuban Missile Crisis. This is not, as I’d anticipated, a good refresher, or introduction, or overview, of the Cold War. It feels like the product of Gaddis cannibalizing his own prior (and excellent) historical work to produce a mediocre cliff notes version of the Cold War. The result is just that: mediocre. The best part of the book is not an incisive overview of the Cold War with attention to its major confrontations; it’s rather the Epilogue, in which Gaddis brings to bear his remarkable knowledge to offer thoughts on the Cold War’s legacy. If you’re looking for a good introduction to the Cold War, however, go elsewhere.

After my husband purchased the book and suggested we do it together, I decided why not. He was offering to do the cooking, so I sat back and did what he told me to. I wasn't too thrilled with the idea, but since he did the hardwork, what could I lose? The first two days were bloody hell. I had body aches and fell like absolute crap! So I starting reading the book and found out this was called the "carb flu". Despite of doing the Paleo before and not having these symptoms (I chalk it up to having too much carb storage after the binge eating of the holidays), I decided to stick it out since Dr. Kellyann said this was normal and stay the course! So glad that I did! We have 9 days left of the 21 days and I feelamazing!!!! At first the broth was a little nasty to me, but now I love it. (A little bit of Crystal hot sauce helps me a ton!) The other day I had so much energy that I cleaned my house from top to bottom from the second I woke up to the moment I went to bed! It was crazy!!My kids told me yesterday when I walked through the door, "Whoa, Mom!! You've lost weight!" I was beaming!! My skin also looks great! (I had a brown sun spot downright disappear from my forehead! No joke!) The craziest thing is that I don't have sweet cravings anymore. I know I will be able to do the maintenance program, no problem. But I do miss my red wine! That's the hardest part. But my body needed the break from alcohol and sleep has never been better.Oh yeah!!! Get this! This diet has cured my husband's insomnia. I'm. Dead. Serious. He is hypoglycemic and would wake him up in the middle to eat and this diet has stabilized his blood sugars so he sleeps like a log. It's crazy to him! (His skin looks amazing too, by the way. He actually looks like he has a slight tan!I wish I would've taken before pictures. But honestly I didn't think I'd have these kind of results and I also didn't think I would able to stick to the diet 100%. But I have and I will for the next 9 days.So glad my husband bought this and "made" me do this diet!****Update. I have lost a total of 12 pounds!!!!! AND I have a week left!! I'm in shock!!! Thank you, Dr. Kellyann!!

I can't begin to describe how great this diet is. I lost 15 lbs. On top of that this diet has cured my depression and anxiety, it's lowered my resting heart rate from 140 to 75, it's given me more energy than I can spend, and it's made me sleep more soundly than I've ever slept. I used to have no energy for working out but now I have so much energy that I WANT to exercise to burn it off! Unlike other diets I've tried, this one makes me want to stay on it forever. I just feel so GOOD. It's incredible how much your diet impacts so many aspects of your health.

This book is not only informative but I believe has the answers to my inflammation problems...I am glad I found it and since I had been following the broth lifestyle, I am not only feeling better, but my awful asthma cough has subsided considerably.

Awesome on day 16 and have been dropping weight like crazy.. my wife said I look years younger lol I'm a health nut but can go off the reservation a little.. this has been easy to do. I have found way through her book to get pass my cravings.. this diet shocked me on the results so far. I have been on many low or no carb diets but this one is the best.

My wife over did this program. She stayed on the diet for 13 months, sticking pretty close to the program described. There is a good reason to pay attention to the 21 days printed on the cover. My wife is now recovering from a bad case of "Keto Flu", she depleted her electrolytes and almost lost touch with reality. 21 days every six months is probably OK, but keep real close track of things.

I am a 65 year old guy who is about 60# overweight. I bought this book and used it as Dr. Kellyann suggests. Without any exercise at all, I've lost 35# in 8 consecutive weeks of dieting, plus I feel much healthier, more energetic and my facial skin looks a little younger., Specifically, I lost 14# in the first 2 weeks, then 9# more in the next 2 weeks, then 7# more in the next 2 weeks and then 5# more in the past 2 weeks. During those 8 weeks, I over-indulged in unhealthy food and drinks on about 7 different days when attending social events. I've tried all the popular diet plans before with limited results. The Bone Broth Diet is by far the easiest and most effective diet I've ever tried. The key to this diet is the bone broth itself. I'm consuming nothing but 6 cups of beef bone broth on two, non-consecutive mini-fast days per week as the book advises. Tip - I bought my first beef broth from local health store and it was weak, expensive at $2.00 per cup, and not very satisfying. As a result, those mini-fasting days were tough to tolerate. So, I started making my own beef broth in my crock pot for 24 hours with tap water, onions, celery, carrots, pepper, Himalayan salt, garlic, and grass fed beef bones from a local farm - total cost $.50 per cup. It is delicious and very satisfying, so now the mini-fasting days are a breeze. This is such an easy diet that I'm going to continue dieting a few more weeks to see how much more weight I can lose.

This is a clean paleo diet (no dairy, grains, sugar etc) plus two days a week that you fast and only drink bone broth. Bone broth is super good for you.There.I just saved you the money.Edit: it has some decent recipes. Also bone broth *is* really excellent for you.

Great book! Hoping for a new updated version since the book includes family trees and there have been a lot of births and deaths since 1999. There are no other books out there with these latest updates, so this is still the best book out there about these whales living in the Pacific Northwest.

My girlfriend is a huge fan of Whales, and Orca in particular. I bought this as a gift for her and she loves it.

I just returned from a kayaking trip in the Johnston Straight just East of North Vancouver Island known as the inside passage. We had first hand views of the Orcas. This book was used as a reference manual to identify some of the whales. It has wonderful reference pictures of the known pods (families) in the area. It goes into great detail on their eating habits, language, and family history. It also explains their social behavior, and the differences between the pods. It is a wonderful book full of pictures, and details.

If you have read any books previously on the lives of orcas, this book is an excellent source of furthering your knowledge. Learning about the individual pods and family members is great, but being able to look them up and study their genealogy makes the reading experience all the better. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in orcas, or interested in nature in general.

I have a lot of books about killer whales, but this one is by far the best scientific book on orcas.It contains mass amounts of information on orcas, great pictures ,a really good ID catalogue (if not the best) and much more...A must have for everyone who's interested in Orcas

Killer Whales (2000), written by killer whale experts John Ford, Graeme Ellis, and Ken Balcomb, provides an overview of the three "eco-types" of killer whales in the Pacific Northwest: the offshore, transient (mammal-eating), and resident (fish-eating) populations, with a focus on the latter type - transients are covered in the companion book Transients (1999), by the first two authors of this book. The book is divided into five chapters which describe the various differences between the three populations (e.g. appearance, diet, social structure, dialects, and occurrence), detail the social structure of resident orcas (from matrilines to communities), tell you where you can see killer whales, presents a photographic catalogue of resident killer whales to allow you to individually identify them in the field, and finally covers conservation concerns (including the availability of food, pollutants, and vessel disturbance) and their future prospects. "Sidebars" or interludes cover such topics as telling apart the three eco-types, how to differentiate males from females, and genetics. The book includes a number of (mainly) black-and-white photographs, several maps, a glossary, and a bibliography. Along with Transients (1999), this work offers a great resource for those wishing to learn more about killer whales in the Pacific Northwest.

May I first say I have never encountered a better identification book then Killer Whales and Transients. Both books are written by THE wild orca authority in the Pacific Northwest. Catalouged pictures and organized information of each individual in every pod along the coast from WA to northern BC along with accurate info on feeding, behavioral and other habits of the pods in Puget Sound and British Columbia. Truly a great book, and as I plan on researching these animals in my adulthood, it has been a great boost to my knowledge on them.

Francesco Clementi is a Professor Emeritus of Pharmacology at the University of Milan. He authored over 200 publications dealing with neurotransmitter receptors and co-edited several books on neuropharmacology and cell biology including all four editions of the Italian language version of this book, Farmacologia Generale e Molecolare.Guido Fumagalli has been the Dean of Faculty Director of the PhD School of Translational Medicine, Vice-Provost for Research, and Vice-Provost for International Affairs at the University of Verona. I have read this most interesting textbook on General and Molecular Pharmacology with a feeling of ’this should have indeed been done, what a timely production!’. The book was put together by Guido Fumagalli and Francesco Clementi, accompanied by a very impressive cohort of co-authors and was printed in late September 2015. It differs from other books in the field in that it covers both the historical origin and the future prospects of molecular pharmacology with its links to many other fields of research, including psychology (with the enlightening contributions of Giancarlo Pepeu), biochemistry and material science. The book is comprehensively built in a target-oriented approach that assists the readers in better understanding the cellular and molecular mechanism of action of the described drugs, which immediately sheds new light on their clinical applications. It further integrates a global view of molecular pharmacology, which enables fresh understanding of the research power of drugs, viewing them as tools for in-depth discovery of new cell functions, mechanisms and well-balanced therapies. I am impressed by this textbook in general pharmacology. Its style is consistent throughout. The presentation of basic molecular and pharmacological concepts is clear. I like its organization into a separate basic themes, each admirably brief but to the point and up to date as far as I can tell. It is easy to find ones way around the book. The implications of basic knowledge for therapeutic interventions are well laid out, both existing ones and others under development. Limitations of current therapies are emphasized, which should help in avoiding overmedication.
